If it's not registered in your name I believe your out of luck. As for fixing the E74 error it is GPU related and can be fix with xclamp mod or reflowing the GPU will repair it.

Try to get it to become the 3RLOD, then they'll repair it regardless of whether you're the original owner, as long as it's sealed and at least 3 years from manufacturing date. (ex. 2006 made console is guaranteed until 2009 minimum)

Well since it came out in 2005, everyone who has one is still covered under the new warranty extension.  November 2008 will be when it goes away for some people.

I also got the E-74 error. Microsoft told me it would be best to talk to the retailer I bought it from. Lucky for me they gave me a new xbox when I sendt my old to them. Took a week.
