Bga Reflow Alternative?
« on: August 21, 2007, 04:12:00 AM »

ok this is gonna sound real dumb but i guess in my situation its worth a try. i got 3 red lgihts blah blah got it fixed, blah blah died again, chips fall off, 360 stopped started send it for repair(not to ms). guy could not fix it so basically mobo is fckd. from my understanding the connections have somehow broken on the board. some1 told me to do bga reflow but its not possible in my country so i was thinking:

WHY NOT BAKE THE MOTHERBOARD IN THE OVEN FOR LIKE 10 MINS. lol. I KNOW IT SOUNDS DUMB BUT AS A LAST RESORT, IS THERE ANY CHANCE IT MIGHT ACTUALLY WORK?
THANX

i tried it on a spare board and ended up overheating the capacitors on the board. they leaked and the board must have not been very level so its screwed. plus the board emits a godawful smell when its heating up. so i would not recommend it at all, unless you want to screw the board completely. do the bga reflow theirs a couple members on here that offer their services, im pretty sure theyll work with you.  superbee is one of their names

The chips that fell off will likely have to be reballed too, something you cannot do without special equipment.

When PCB are manufactured, yes they are put through an oven (reflow oven), the difference is that one of this is  $15,000.00 US . Like Navillos mentioned some of the capacitors and other components are surface mount which means that there added after the PCB has gone through the oven.

If putting a PCB in an oven would repair defective boards, then you would think that the manufacturer would use it to repair there defective board. They don't a rework station is used to do repairs. A very high percentage of the 3rl repairs are relate to the GPU chip solder balls, so why would take the risk of damaging all of the other components when you only need to fix one? Baking it in an over would be no better than doing the "towel trick", or in other words, it's a bad idea.
