Tortuga's X-clamp Replacement Tutorial For 3 Red Lights
« Reply #15 on: October 08, 2007, 09:01:00 PM »

I believe that Tortuga uses the overheat method and if that fails a heatgun to reflow the the GPU chip, but he also uses a thermometer to control the heat that he applies to the chip. The heat applied should not exceed 210 deg. C. The reflow should eliminate the graphical problems.

Tortuga correct me if I'm wrong.

I usually use the heat gun . I only tried the overheat on a couple of boxs just to see if it would work . and it did , but it doesn{t usually last as long. week or two.

Ive done far more using the heat gun and they for the most part have been pretty good.
I usually go straight to the heatgun now , sometimes it{ll work just by clamping everything .  but if it doesn{t, the heatgun works every time so instead of having to pull it all apart and do it again I  started to do that.

just do the x-clamp mods. stop bothering with the heatgun.

Tortuga2112, you should add cleaning the stock m$ thermal paste off and replacing it with AS5. on 4 out of 5 xboxes i repaired they all had the stock m$ pastse hardened or melted onto the GPU chip. which i believe caused the chip to overheat and flash 3 red lights.

some times you need to heatgun it or it won't work.

If you're lucky it'll work without , but it all depends on the specific box. and yes , replacing the thermal paste is a must . I just assumed that was common knowledge (and common sense) by now that's why I didn't mention it.

I get asked all the time if they can just use ceramique instead of AS5.... tongue.gif
Looks very promising Tortuga2112! Nice share, basic skill with tap & die - and this is relatively easy to do. I like it...

thanks, man.

I was hoping to get some input from you or rbjtech.

I might actually put together a kit for like $10 and post in the BST since I still see a lot of guys saying they're having trouble finding the appropriate hardware for your method . I got a few guys asking about the mod , but i think the majority of guys think its too hard, so many people are intimidated into not trying it.

its a lot easier to slap some pennies under the rams and put it back together. which isn't a good idea in my opinion, but to each his own.

Just saying thanks for this  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I had been using RBJTech's method to good effect uptil trying this method for the first time this evening. Worked first time (although I used a SMD heat station too). Much easier to cut threads in the standoffs compared to drilling out the chasis, lining up bolts, using tape to keep bolts in place etc...

One thing mentioned in this thread was the die size of 10/32 - I used the 5mm 0.8mm die in my set as I've tons of 5mm 0.8mm nuts to use up. No problems whatsoever. The nuts weren't the nylon type so I used inner toothed shakeproof washers instead.

cool, glad it worked for you.

yeah , metric or imperial, doesn't matter.  my set was imperial so that's what I used.

also , the nut doesn't absolutely have to be a locking one. It was just my preference just in case.

ok, I just didn't think it was a good price is all I was saying.  but hey, its your money if you want to buy it, if you can't wait for it . like you said some people will want it now.

and I guess for some it might work out better once you factor in shipping.

FYI, if you can't find a 10/32 die, (metric countries, ect) then you could try an 8mm die.

10/32 is actually 7.9 and some milimetres, so it should work.

Hi guys,
I just did this fix (first time ever) so I was a bit nervous but everything seems to go smoothly. The box booted up fine on first test with case open. However, once I put everything back, the damn red rings came back! I wonder if I tighten the bots to much? what about the 8 black bolts that hold the xclams? should I leave them out or put them back in? it booted up fine without tightenning any bolts to the case...please help!!!
