still trying to no avail. but on an interesting note, i found on a post somewhere that holding y and the r trigger during startup, you can reset the video out put. i tried this, and the first time i got an e79 and 1 red light. thats weird. turned it off. back on and back to the update failed screen. ok, nothing happened. so i put in halo 3, while holding the connect button, turned it off, turned it back on and pressed y + r trigger. this time, the system froze as the xbox 360 logo is rotating. turned it off again, and it's like nothing ever happened. it still goes to the update failed screen, so that problem still exists, but after following the same steps a few times, i never was able to reproduce the e79 or frozen startup.

but i got another broken 360 off ebay today, hope this one turns out better than the one i have now.

It keeps giving update failed screen !

I have tried everyting that stated before my post but nothing helps
Its doesnt play anything at all alsno no dvd.

He has a ps2 for 4 years en never had problems, I sould never bought him the 360 but the ps3, I could have known that MS would give problems just like with windows xp.

This realy sucks and I am mad as Hell, does anybody has a solution ??

lawman -

Had the same exact problem as you - not my kids b-day though.

I tried fewl's fix and that didn't work.  Here's what I did (make sure you are on the purple screen of death) -

1) connected directly to the cable modem instead of the router
2) removed the hard drive
3) inserted a game, in this case madden 08
4) reattached the hard drive - hard, make sure you get the back clips with a good amount of force.  (i'm not sure if force had anything to do with it, but it worked)

The console then rebooted itself and played the game.  From there I've been money.  Good luck.

non of the suggestion wored for me

I bought 2 x 360 core with rrod off ebay - open to find one of the worst clamp removal fixes - they had used paper as spacers and about 10g of paste lol and they had used the bolt to board method 16 m scews rammed through the gpu heatsink why ?i have alos found the non drilling method fails within a few weeks when it works

take note of what i have done i have managed to fix this issue on one of my machines

As with other 360 I have had success with i used rjb tech v 3  drill out the 8 holes etc 4 nylons below 2 above mobo etc

one machine booted but was artifacting very badly

found heating the memory chips resolved that one - 30 secons low heat 3-4 inches off board in circular motiuon

high for 1 min 10 to 14 inch from board ( make sure you use tin foil over any plastic bits caps etc )

however on the second machine ( secondary error WAS 0102 )

I got the machine to boot to the purple screen rambling on about update failed insert hard drive did as asked but kept going back to the purple screen but still getting artifacts

I then decided to ( not sure why ) corss between the bolt to board ( cpu ) and bolt through case

it booted to the purple screen with 3 reds -

i thought lets try the update file on a usb stick ( placed in the rear usb slot and stick halo 3 in the DVD drive for good mesure)  smile.gif

no hard drive in the machine btw

re booted but still going to the purple screen me bing me decided to push down on the cpu heatsink - the screen went green - hmm - so i pushed on the heatsink whilst re booting the xbox - the light on the pen drive flashed and next thing i know im in the dash - however still artifacting on screen

halo 3 also boots

rebooted no more purple screen - update issue - maybe this is somthing to do with the connection tracks between the GPU AND THE CPU - well under the overheated GPU

next step remove all the screws and put back togethor with rjb rev 3 -

still artifacting and oddly I can see the dash - I have 3 red lights on the front and the secondary error has changed to 0101 - ??????????????? uhh.gif

hope this goes some way in others endevours to fix the purple screen of death

time for the heat gun on this one

spent 3 days fiddling to get this far -

Well I bought an Xbox 360 off my co-worker becasue he was getting Error 74.
I did the X-clamp fix with the heat gun solder reflow and got the system to boot up.
But like the rest of you I'm stuck at this purple failed update screen. The system I bought off him was a premium console but he kept the HDD for his new Xbox360.

So I'm stuck with 1 game Forza 2 and no HDD...
Ive tried the methods mentioned with Forza 2 and my friends copy of Assassins Creed.. but no luck.

Anyone one find a sure fix? Ill have to borrow my friends copy of Halo 3 and try it again..

I had exactly the same problem on a none flashed xbox and tried all the advise with no joy (with one of the games suggested) but then got a GTA IV disk off a mate and it worked.

Turned on console (no HDD or memory card just network cable) got purple screen so put in GTA IV held down the wireless sync button, turned console off and back on keeping wireless sync button in and it went to dash after about 10 seconds.

Perhaps you just need to put in a disk that has the same or newer update on than what it has failed on.

Been working great since.

It finally worked! (Thanks to blade007's post) wink.gif

Here's what I did:

1. Get Purple screen of death.
2. Put in a copy of GTA IV (modded drive)
3. Held down wireless sync button.
4. Turn off console (still holding sync button).
5. Turn on console (still holding sync button).
6. Purple screen of death appears (still holding sync button).
7. Hit "A" to Continue (still holding sync button).
8. Approx. 20 seconds of spinning purple light (still holding sync button).
9. Then Dash appeared asking if I wanted to continue with the update.
10. Selected Continue.
11. Didn't have enough space because harddrive wasn't attached.
12. Hit Cancel. (I think xbox restarted)
13. Put on harddrive.
14. Rebooted xbox and New Dash was up and running perfectly! smile.gif

Hope this helps.
Good luck!

Thats because the last update you got via xbox live has rendered ALL non-micro$oft memory units unusable.

Sorry mate, but your screwed!!!

Try to reset the update as following:

--==Console Reset Codes==--
Clear All Installed Game Updates and Console Cache

   1. Go to the "system" blade
   2. Select "memory"
   3. Press Y on the HD symbol
   4. Press X,X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X
   5. A message will appear saying: "Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?"
   6. Select Yes

Clear Any Failed system updates that cause the console to error.

   1. With the console off, press and hold the sync up button (the small white one)
   2. While holding the sync button press the power button to turn on the console
   3. Continue to hold the sync button until the Console has booted up completely.
   4. During the boot process the console should clear any failed updates, allowing you to use it normally.

this is how i fixed this on a repaired xbox :

When you get the failed update message, it tells you what dash it tries to install and what dash it was before, for me it tried to install the 7371 update.

I simply downloaded the offline 7371 dash update, put it in an USB stick. I plugged the stick and the xbox booted fine without pressing anything ^^

Hope this can help people ^^
