When I Start It States, "couldn't Find Your Xbox 360 Hard Dri

Tried the towel trick, didn't work.  My 360 turned off automatically from overheating.  When I booted it up it still said update failed.  Is anyone out there able to help us out?

i have the same problem... got a box with the 3 light error off ebay, did x clamp replacement... runs smooth now... let it run for a long time and it never overheats, when i first got it it turned off in less than a minute.  so now i'm stuck at the purple screen problem also... "cannot find hard drive etc... update failed" contacted MS support... you already know how that went... does anyone have any insight on how this can be fixed?

I just had this happen.  No HD in the system when it tried to do the update and failed.  Added the HD, same error.  It happened when I tried to play Madden 08.  I put in NCAA 08 in and held the snc button (took forever) in while booting up and it loaded NCAA without a problem.  Has loaded everything else since with no problem...

I have the same issue. I did the xclamp replacement on a box with a the seal intact (before I got to it).  After getting it to boot, I see this screen.  Fixed a number of systems - first time i have seen this.

When I had this error I did this and it worked.

Turn on the 360, you will get the update failed screen.
1.Hold down the white button that scans for the controller, you will see the light spinning in circles, keep holding it.
2.Insert a game, in my case I had Bioshock.
3.Turn off the 360 while still holding the white button.
4.Turn it back on while still holding the white button.

and it should take a while but it should boot up the game and fix the problem.

Just keep trying different ways to turn off/on the 360 while holding the white button. Load the game at a different time etc..

I did the xclamp replacement and also what was advised here on forum a few times.Nothing yet but still trying different ways to start up while holding sync button. It seems that drive spins game for a couple seconds and stops. While on the update screen. When that happens failed update and the no hard drive message comes on.Just putting in what I notice.Still trying to figure this one out. uhh.gif Thank you to all who have put info on this.

fewl and fgh-scars, after you got it to work for one game, did this problem go away for you? or do you still have to do this everytime you want to play a game?

I tried this a bunch of different ways.  The closest I get is right before the purple screen, it pauses & says updating for a short time - maybe a second.  Then it continues to purple screen.  Did you guys use backups for this or did you use originals?  Thanks.

i used a backup, i never got the update error again, but the 360 had 3 red lights a couple of days later, i have 2 360s both broken, i would clean the cpu and put the original clamps back on but i found out that the heatsink would pop out of place. I am doing the xclamp fix with the screw and spacers so hopefully i can get them to work for good now.
