3lrod But Not Immediatly, Delayed?
« on: August 07, 2007, 05:22:00 PM »

I have repaired many 360's using either the eraser trick, or xclamp replacement. Normally you turn the power switch on and within a few seconds see the 1, 3, and four lights flashing. This particular machine I am working with is being stubburn. One weird thing about it is that after power on it takes maybe 30-40 seconds to see the 3 red lights. No video/audio output of course. Secondary error code is 0022. Has anyone else seen it take so long to get the 3 red lights?

Seen that type of behavior on systems that have been toweled. If that's the case you probably won't be able to apply enough pressure from the xclamps for it to clear, reflowing didn't work either. I couldn't even get the chip off the board. If you donig this for a customer ask him the question has it been towled.

superbee has a point its usually the only time the CPU gets damaged is when you towel it.. but.. dont be too distraught if he only did it once or twice.. it still may be salvageable.. and a reflow is possible. = )

Omnix is right also it depends how long it was left wrap in the towel. The longer the harder the solder balls get.

Thanks for all of your replies. Actually this 360 has never had a towel trick or any overheating issues. I modded this box about a month ago, the customer says he left it on all night after watching a movie and woke up to flashing red lights. I thought 0022 was a gpu issue, I will have to recheck that. I have tried heating the board up, tried eraser and pennies as well (after heating) but no success with anything. I also cleaned the thermal paste from cpu/gpu and heatsinks. cleaned heatsinks and applied artic silver, Also put more tension on xclamps, no success on anything as of yet. I stopped with it after awhile, have a few wii's and ps2's to mod, lol. Any more suggestions? thanks everyone for your input.

I think this is why some suggest reflowing and reballing as opposed to heat gunning and overheating your system.  The latter just creates a temporary fix and likely more damage.

Um, if you would have read correctly this sytem had never been heated. It is in its current state all on its own, just trying to get some life back in it.

i would recommend trying my x-clamp mod that is in my signature.. and personally i think and have done heatgunning alot without ever causing any problems to any system... just do it before the x-clamp mod to the gpu and cpu

OK, so has the 360 been heated or not? And waking up to find the 3RLoD doesn't seem too likely as when a problem occurs the 360 crashes then when you restart it you get the 3RLoD it wouldnt have changed os he wouldn't of woken up to it.

I'll admit that there has been some success with this fix, but for the most part it has destroyed more consoles that could have been fixed. When too much heat is applied to the mobo parts start to fall off. Some are so small that you don't even notice that there gone. I'm not shooting down your statement that it does work I'm just saying that this fix has probably killed more 360 then it has fixed. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Like I stated previously, I modded this box about a month and a half ago for a customer. He called me a few days ago and said he woke up to 3 red lights. He said that he was watching a movie on his box, and in the morning he saw red. I see no reason for him to lie to me. He wasnt upset with me at all. I informed him that this has no relation to his firmware being modified. He was very nice and said he understood that it wasnt related at all. He just wants me to fix it. I agreed to try. So even though normally this might not happen this way, I believe fully that it did to him this time.

The only heat applied to this motherboard was by myself trying to rid the 3 lights. I have concluded by the secondary code section that this is a cpu issue, so I might try some direct heat (not too much) on the cpu with some weight.

Any other suggestions?
