the error code 0020 is for the pruseure on the GPU and Cpu. i just tell you how i did mine and a few off my mates mine was smiple insted off remove the x clamp back plate and replacing with screws and washers i fold that cleaning the the heat sink and putting new silver compound on like it say in the x clap one but keeping the old x clamp back plate just use one platic washer on it when u clamp it under the baord  it put's enouth preassure on it and makes a fantastic contact to the cpu and the gpu ,
like i did my mates for him and he had already removed the back plate and i had to mess around with the preausser to get it to work again if any one want me to show them what i mean just give me a shout.
hope this help someone and makes it easy for you

Xbox 360 3 Red Light Error 0020 Fix

X-clamp fixed my 360... but there's a problem. Almost every time i turn it on it shows 0020 error code. Then i let it stay like that for about 2 min and then turn it off. I then wait like 5 sec and when i turn it on.... no error code and it doesn't freeze or do anything... i play for and hour or two and i turn it off... later when i come back and turn it on i get the 0020 error code again and then i do the same thing again and it starts working.

Anyone know what it could be?? I always play with the air conditioner turned on and I wait like 5-10 min for the a/c air to circulate the room before turning it on. The top cover is always open and i've also placed a powerful fan next to the 360 at an angle which blows air at the cpu heat sink and the small portion of the gpu heat sink that can be seen under the dvd drive. After all of this... when i touch the heat sinks they are very cold... maybe 15 C.

Its now like a car.... i gotta warm it up before i can start playing it. Is there such a thing as a low temperature point where the gpu or cpu doesn't working?

Xbox 360 3 Red Light Error 0020 Fix
« Reply #18 on: June 17, 2009, 12:26:00 PM »

I had just done the xclamp replacement and overheated the system to get the new solder to flow.  It seemed to be working, so I put the system back together.  What do you know it freezes again.  I though I'd give it another shot to see if I had maybe put too much solder on it.  So I go through the process again (make sure that the flat heat sink, which is the problem heat sink, is flat and cannot move at all) and try it out with the xbox open and it works like a dream.  So again I put everything back together, RROD!  It usually wouldn't red ring like that, so I decided to see what code I had.  I had the 0020 code.  TO FIX THIS, I LEFT OUT ALL OF THE SMALLER TORX BOLTS, WHICH HOLD THE MOTHERBOARD IN PLACE, PUT EVERYTHING BACK TOGETHER, AND BAM, PERFECT XBOX 360.  IF YOU HAVE THE 0020 CODE GO TRY THIS AND IT WILL PROBABLY WORK FOR YOU,  LET ME KNOW WHAT HAPPENS.

I see... Ok there is possibly a CAPACITOR under the GPU about to be loose. This means when you got to see the green lights this only meant that the capacitor's solder touched the motherboard in the correct spot (FOR A RECENT TIME).  But to fix this could be tricky... because once it is loosed already its critical to put it back on there by resoldering.

Do you see the capacitor im talking about? and to warn you "don't touch that capacitor"... blink.gif

My 0020 error seemed to be related to bad solder under the GPU.
After doing the XClamp fix, it worked for about a week before I got the same error again.
Then I tightened the bolts a bit and overheated the GPU to reflow the solder.
Afterwards, I slightly loosened the bolts again to the point before the overheating and it works fine ever since.

Xbox 360 3 Red Light Error 0020 Fix

Hey i just found an odd fix for my error code 0020.
So im borrowing my friends xbox for like a year while hes gone, and what do you know.. i get the red ring. after researching some, i discoverd alot of theories about error code 0020. one of them was about pressure on the GPU.
so i messed around with it for hours, couldnt figure anything out, and for some reason i decided to take off the gpu heatsink and pressed down on the upper left corner of the gpu mini circuit board (mine had a silver marking on this corner?)
turned it on, and BAM no error code
so ive now temporarily cut off the corner of a credit card and placed in under the heatsink in order to provide more pressure to it
not sure if its just luck or what but its been working great for a day and a half now
hope this helps anyone with the same problem

Another hint if it all didn't help:
  • RROD: Error 08 / 0020
  • Try to get an error-free bootup by turning off and on again immediately  after fans loose power.
  • Success rate this 360 (build June 2006) 2-3 of 10 tries.
  • That is a symptom of a bad capacitor most likely in the hottest area behind the gpu.
  • The yellow ones around the gpu changed to solid capacitors on the later revisions
  • General issue on many electronics after years of usage
  • The only mod I did before was renewing the thermal compound and light bending of the x-clamps to reduce the tension what didn't help

the thing that needs to be understood is that an x clamp is a temporary fix. the reason the error codes appear is because of the solder balls, the x clamp forces a connection. the proper way is with heat. the heat realigns the solder balls to provide a stable connection.
