Well, Crap. Twice Now The Xclamp Replacement Has Failed.
« on: June 24, 2007, 08:50:00 AM »

Here's a warning to everyone: resistors can fall off near the gpu/cpu while you're heating the board up, or afterwards. The first time it happened I thought I had simply knocked it off and soldered it back on (it was a larger one near the gpu). This time, about 5 very tiny ones that I couldn't have possibly knocked off must have fell or became damaged somehow, with no hope of getting these back on.

in future, don't use a heatgun, there is absoluty NO need what so ever for it if you are doing an x-clamp replacement.

I'm not stupid enough to use a heatgun, I just let the box overheat itself with the heatsinks hand tightened. I also don't move the box while it's hot and I use the remote to turn it on/off. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember heating it being a required step in the guide, and so far it has worked for me. I also knew that heat transfered to the bottom of the board, but damn, I didn't expect it to affect transfer that well. Some of the resistors are soldered in crooked now, so I can say with certainty that I did not knock them off. How would you recommend doing it to avoid this?

Pics!

First of all, microsoft gets the failure award for their beautiful use of thermal paste, or lack thereof: http://glitches.plan...0s/251_5112.jpg

Here is the first one I had come off:

Now this just happened. I was fixing a new box my friend had bought since his was banned and:

The two missing resistors seem to be destroyed, I have no idea how. You will notice that two more are crooked.

These three are gone.

So are these two.

Oh shit, I just looked at the cpu. Game over.
