Error Code 0022 = CPU Connection to the mother board (CPU has a part of it raised up off the mother board)

A friend of mine and I experiment with Xbox 360s and have been narrowing down EXACTLY what the codes are to keep from doing all the guessing. We had have pointed about 5 codes so far and the 0022 is definatley the CPU.

Error Code 0102 = GPU Connection to the mother board (GPU has a part of it raised up off the mother board)

Error Code 0010 = South Bridge Connection to the mother board (South Bridge has a part of it raised up off the mother board)

Error Code 74    = We heated the ANA chip with a heat gun from the bottom of the board. Put 4.4 ounces of weight on top of the ANA chip and it works like a charm now.

Error Code 0103 = GPU Connection to the mother board (This error is by heating up the GPU and then pressing TOO HARD and the solder squishes out from underneath the chip)

I am doing tests on the RAM chips next. I will keep you posted on the results

Finally, some well needed research.  Good job guys, keep it up.

I have something to include based on one certain console that I'm trying to fix right now for somebody.  His box is coming up with the 0020 error code after about 10-15 seconds after boot up, and what I noticed was wrong with his board was when he tried the x-xlamp replacement, while screwing in the machine screws to the under side of the mobo, it looks like the screwdriver slipped and scratched right across 1 or possibly 2 of the traces.
So maybe 0020 means that there is a broken connection between 2 of the components.  I honestly don't know for sure, but I might as well throw it out there and see if any one else notices this.  Thanks again guys, this thread looks like it's gonna be a good one

One more thing, I hope you guys are working on figuring out that stupid 0110 code.  Too frequent and inconsistent to diagnose.

I pinpointed the 0110 error code today.  I lifted the front left corner of the GPU chip and got a 0110 error so 0110 is definitely GPU related.

Hi Guys

What method of heat are you using to lift or unsolder the BGA? What means of inspection are you using to verify the lifted connections?

Hey great idea!  I have a 0020-stricken box.  Can't wait to hear what you find on this one!

***update*** as of 06/23/2007

I do not have the "EDIT" option for my posts, so I will do the updates this way until I get it.

A friend of mine and I experiment with Xbox 360s and have been narrowing down EXACTLY what the codes are to keep from doing all the guessing.

For orientation, the mother board is facing you with the "Ring of Lights" connection facing YOU and the "AV" and "Power connection" facing AWAY from you.

Error Code 0022 = CPU Connection to the mother board
(CPU has a part of it raised up off the mother board)

Error Code 0102 = GPU Connection to the mother board
(GPU has a part of it raised up off the mother board)
(The "Front/Right" and "Rear/Left" of the GPU has a bad connection to the mother board)

Error Code 0110 = GPU Connection to the mother board
(GPU has a part of it raised up off the mother board)
(The "Front/Left" of the GPU has a bad connection to the mother board

Error Code 0021 = GPU Connection to the mother board
(GPU has a part of it raised up off the mother board)
(The "Rear/Right" of the GPU has a bad connection to the mother board

Error Code 0010 = South Bridge Connection to the mother board

Error Code 0022 = CPU Connection to the mother board

(Any area of the CPU that has a bad connection, will give you this error. If the GPU is good, it will take about 10-15 seconds before the ring of lights will flash with the three red lights. This is pretty much a guarantee that the CPU is the issue and will give you the 0022 error code)

yes i must confirm 1 account that i got the 0110 error and i took my box apart as i was very mad. I firmly pressed as hard as i could on the gpu after i let it overheat on its own with the 3rlod. I let it cool while i kept a very forceful pressure on the gpu heatsink. After it cooled i released the pressure and it booted up fine for about an hour of play. This may have been coincidence but it seemed like it worked but i didnt try it again or anything else after that. just called ms and sent it in for repairs.  i should get it back in a couple of days. But just for a control so that it wasnt just the over heating that made it work again i had done the towel trick twice b4 that and it didnt make it work at all.

hope i helped a lil

I do more than one to give these errors before I post them. As far as what I have found to be the best way to repair this dreaded 3 red light is to:

1) clean all goup off of the CPU and GPU
2) put mother board (no tin foil) up on two boxes so that you can easily get a heat gun underneath the mother board to heat the GPU and CPU from the bottom.
3) Put 4.4 ounces of weight on top of the GPU and the CPU
4) Heat on HIGH for 3 minutes from underneath the board only giving LOVE to the GPU and the CPU
5) Let it COOL for 1 hour (Do not touch for anything)
6) After one hour, clean the GPU and CPU again and place ARTIC SILVER on both of them
7) Do Lawdogs (sorry if I mispelled your name) heatsink mod to the GPU and the CPU
(DO NOT SUBSTITUE ANYTHING ON THIS TUTORIAL OR IT WILL ERROR AGAIN!!)
8) Clean the fan with the Clorox Cleaning wipes (blades with dust do not expel heat)
9) You can do some fan mods if you want to, but I havent done any of them yet and I have been fine. They are still great mods to do if you can do them
10) Put back together and play.
(I have been running mine for almost two months and I havent had any problems. I get up in the morning to go to work, I turn my 360 on and leave it on all day. I come home, I sometimes play and sometimes not. If I dont play I still turn it off around the time I go to bed and let it cool. I then repeat the next day. So far so good. I have repaired a lot using this method and to date, no complaints)

Nice topic. Some light at the end of the tunel

A video or some picture could be very useful.

Like the distance betwen your board and heat gun, your boxes setup.

And after all, a way to repair error 0020. I only have result with towel tricks. Sure it's a bad connection somewhere...but Where?

Anyway, don't give up!

if tht don;t work i try and leave the heatsink on the die and add a extra 4.4ounces and reheat on high form below and see what happen

hopefully that fixesm it

If it helps you one time I get one with error 0110 and when I press with my finger the front left memory it works so I found a way to put a little pressuare on it and then heat in high for a couple of minutes and since then is working fine.
And another thing, error 74 can be caused be a wrong connection I think are resistors under the gpu, if you can search my posts is a picture of the little thing that I broke accidentally doing a x-clamp replacement.
And more than once I get error 0020 by putting to much pressure in the rear left bolt of the GPU.
Hope that info help you making a more extensive Error code Guide.

Here is a picture of the way that I heat the GPU and the CPU. I use two Xbox 360 cases with the top wrapped in tin foil (to keep it from melting the plastic of course). I position it so that I have a clear shot of the complete underside of the GPU and the CPU. The weight on top of the GPU and the CPU is four nuts that I have wrapped in tin foil (again the reason for the tin foil is that I am trying to keep as much heat off the top of the board as possible) The nuts add up to be 4.4 ounces. I have put more weight before but it is too much as this seems to be perfect.

Here is a picture of my setup. As far as the distance from the chip, I have the heatgun about one inch from the chips as I heat.

IN terms of 0020 error i have put very little t almost not pressure on both the gpu and cpu and i still get the error hear is exactly what happened to my teh xbox

this present motherboard has 0020 error it 1st had 0102 error and i fixed that my xclamps replacement method and the board worked fine but then after about 17 hours of game play i got a power supply error and when i checked that out some soldering i did was touching the metal casing so i fixed that and when i put the board back 2gether the screen would be red and the xbox360 logo would be i the background so i took the board back out again to check any soldering that might have gone wrong no thing was wrong as far as i can tell and when i put the board back 2gether i starting getting 0020 error

when i 1st had the 0102 error i have relize that the bottom right corner board nuts had to slach enough for it to work

after i starting gettign the 0020 error i starting trying diffrent ways to bend the board but very slight

any waz i think i might of squished the solder 2gether on the gpu or cpu

i have used the heatgun but after i did it i didnl;t apply pressure to any gpu or cpu
so u think i should heat the board on high form underneath and apply tthose weights
