X-clamp Bolts...
« on: June 13, 2007, 03:37:00 PM »

im attempting the xclamp fix. when i went to lowes today they had no M5-.80 X 10 Machine Screws Part#138433. Instead they gave me M5-.80 X 10 Hex Cap Screws Part #138240. Will these have the same clearance? or will the hex cap get in the way?

And a few more questions. If i was to do this fix on a perfectly fine 360, just to avoid the 3rod do i have to let the box overheat? Im planning on fixing one with 3rod, and one thats perfectly fine.

how much do the ram sinks cost at compusa, the one that comes with 8?
and what kind of material do i use for the gpu heatsink to allow better flow straight into the ducts, was it cardboard? im just scared of causeing a fire. thanks.

wow. talk about overpriced. well the only difference between those bolts and the one i have.. are.. mine dont have that groove where u can use a straight screw driver to screw it in. for mine youd need a wrench or a socket to screw them in. so yeah i think i'll be fine. that set is overpriced though. lol. i bought all the bolts and washer x's 3. for about $10 or less. haha. thanks anyway.

If you are doing the xclamp replacement on a perfectly fine working box, do NOT overheat it.  That is if you aready have the 3rlod already.  If I were you, I would check my warranty status on that box.  If it is still under warranty, I wouldn't crack it open unitl it got the 3rlod or it goes out of warranty.

I have two 360's, one I bought used (console only) after my original got the lights and I fixed it.  But The new box is still under warranty and I am using that (stock) until the warranty goes up.  Then I will open it and do preventative maintenance.

i got 6 months on the warranty for the good 360, and 6 months on the warranty for the 3rod 360. i would send it to microsoft but i dont want to wait, and i think that they dont do that service in where i live, Guam. Im not sure if microsoft does it to U.S. territories, and i think they use UPS, which charges guam international rate, but USPS charges domestic U.S. rates. so the real issue, is time, and money. im here in Washington right now, and since i dont have lowes on guam i just bought like enough parts to fix 3 xboxes with 3rod(i think i should buy more, and start a repair on guam lol). for the xbox that has no 3 red lights, im just gona wait to do the clamp replacement when, and if that new heatsink comes out for the gpu. btw. washington is sweet, no tax for me .. just like on guam (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I actually ran into the same problem as you and picked up the hex caps with lawdawg's method. Working for a couple months now.

As long as they're machine screws (and the right length and diameter of course), that's all that matters. Anything else will pretty much destroy the holes in your heatsinks.
