New Pictures of 2nd GPU HeatSink on Xbox 360 - Update: Video
« Reply #45 on: June 13, 2007, 06:37:00 PM »

Ok, I didn't read through the multiple pages to see if anyone else said this so sorry if it has already been adressed...

So, this heat pipe. The heat pipe is supposed to transfer heat through this pipe, to the additional (and very small) 2nd heatsink. Sure it sounds like a plan, BUT what about when the xbox is standing vertical?

When vertical, the heat pipe is bent downwards from the main gpu heat sink... Ok, last time I checked heat rises and cool air sinks... Hmmm, how the fuck would this reverse? The heat cannot (well, probably not) travel down through the heat pipe when the xbox is vertical, thus the 2nd gpu heatsink seems somewhat uneffective when the xbox is vertical.

This is mearly my theory based off of the simple rule of the direction that air moves at a certain temperature. I only wish someone could test (the xbox standing vertically vs. horizontally) and see if temps fluctuate between positions... Again, merely just a theory but I've seen and used heat pipes (in my computer) before and my temperatures were slightly different the way the heatpipes faced (horizontally or vertically).

yeah, you said it yourself:  AIR.   we are not talking about air.  hot air rises because it is less dense than cool air.   in a solid material, heat goes where it is cooler, because it wants to evenly spread out all the heat.  it doesn't matter what orientation it's in.

...fuck....i learned that in middle school...

heat pipes just do that much more effectively than a solid piece of copper.

I had this idea awhile back. I even posted a photoshopped pic of a heatpipe setup Exactly like this. Too bad I deleted the pic from photobucket  sad.gif

Heres the thread where a bunch of us were kicking around the heatpipe idea LINK

I dont doubt for a second that microsoft lurks around these forums grabbing ideas from us.

Haha maybe they have a squad following you guys and checking who has modded their 360, so they can get the console banned!

Just come across one of these for a customer, was a repair in the UK , also had a hitachi 079 drive in there, it was only after i modded the drive (removing the flash rom) and put it back together that i realised it had the extra heat pipe  biggrin.gif

heres the piccys.

someone needs to pull the heatsink to make sure it has a copper base.

this could help prevent 3 red lights or gpu overheating, as the 360 sucks air in, the new heatsink will get cooler so we will see if it works =\
