New Pictures of 2nd GPU HeatSink on Xbox 360 - Update: Video
Posted by XanTium | June 13 09:45 EST | News Category: Xbox360

=Ikari= sent us these pictures of his Xbox360 he just got back from repair (after RoD problem) ... another confirmation of the new 2nd heatsink/pipe technology we talked about yesterday that Microsoft installs to provide additional cooling for the Xenos GPU. For now it's unknown if Microsoft just installs this new dual-heatsink technology to repaired Xbox360s or also in new units.

Update: The guys at xbox360fanboy.com also found a video of this new heatsink:

I MUST have that new heatsink installed in my XBOX 360. I can't wait until they start being sold on Divineo.com and other online retailers!  biggrin.gif

/me dreams of that new GPU heatsink alongside my Arctic Silver 5, and full X-Clamp replacement...  pop.gif

I'm no expert but wouldnt it be better to add a heat pipe through both existing heatsinks so the GPU is cooled via the larger CPU heatsink as well?

No - best to have their own heatpipes.  The way heatpipes work is to use the heat to rapidly boil the liquid inside (it's not water) into gas and then cool it off rapidly at the other end, turning it back into liquid which runs back down to start again. - This is why the rad is only at the end of the heatpipe and not finned all the way up the pipe..

About time they are addressing the ROD problems. Hopefully this works and we can stop fixing our consoles when we shouldn't have to be in the first place.

Good News,

Almost an admission from M$ that there design was shit in the 1st place, exactly what my solicitor was waiting for.

Now we are going to start court proceeding against M$ for my 15th returned 360 because of Red light of death.

Like to see them deny the design fault now, Idiots in my opinion.

Just because Microsoft updated their heatsink design, does not mean they submit to having a flawed design to begin with. Thats like saying if they update to a 65nm that their current CPU is flawed, thats not how those things work.

Once the performance numbers come back, then maybe you've got a case. You would have to show that the rate of failure decreased substantially after the new design compared to the old one. Good luck getting performance numbers on that.

I may be wrong in my thinking, but wouldn't this just add more heat to an already heat burdened case that has not so great air flow? Maybe someone with a little more understanding of how this works can give us some details on whether it stands a chance of working or not. Don't get me wrong, I hope it does work and the thing gets replicated and sold 3rd party if it does so everyone can get one, but only if it works.

I'm pretty sure someone went over this in the other thread, but the design seems a bit off to me. Shouldn't the airflow go through the CPU and THEN through the new radiator? Seems like this would add more heat to the wrong places. Although I'm no engineer myself  huh.gif

Myself and many others have been crying out for a heatpipe solution to get the heat away from the GPU heatsink - there is simply no other way to do it due to it's physical limitations.

Now whether the best solution is the pipe coming out the front (as in this solution) or out the back and cooled by the fans directly (my original thoughts) remains to be seen.

Until somebody does some proper analysis on the temperature above the die before and after, we will be none the wiser.  I'd be happy to do this - but I don't have the new heatsink ...
