(Rumor) MS Adding 2nd GPU HeatSink for Better Cooling?

Our contact close to Microsoft had the kindness to forward to us by email the new weapon of Microsoft to fight against the phenomenon of the Ring of Death (ROD). This weapon is quite simply a new hardware configuration for the 360. As you can see from the pictures below, you'll notice the arrival of a new cooling unit located just below the Hitachi 59 DVD-drive whom this console had.

Looks ghetto and tacky but if it works, that's all that matters.

If this actually reduces the risk of the 3RLOD, then MS needs to add this heat sink to any console that they repair, regardless of the reason it was sent in, and also they need to make them available for sale to people with systems no longer under warranty, or at least a 3rd party (or the company that makes this heat sink setup for MS) needs to make one for sale to end users. I've replaced the X-Clamps and added arctic silver to mine, which cured the 3 lights for me, but I'd still add this as a further protection measure if it was available to me.

looks like a bodge job what the hells that doing?

it just floats there!? Surely thats gonna put more strain on the clamps and cause more problems?

If you look at how its attatched its pretty sturdy, so it doesnt look like it'll put any strain on it. What im wondering is, firstly isn't the 0102 error caused by the xclamps forcing bad contact between the mobo and the GPU heatsink, not over heating? and secondly how greatly will this affect the heat anyway? im not sure about the heat pipe but that small heatsink won't disperse heat too greatly.

You'd think a multi-billion dollar company would come up with a better solution than that  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Idk, if it helps, it helps. Personally, if I had a 360 like that, I'd do that mod with the 50/60mm fan in front of the CPU. Not only would it blow heat away from the CPU to the rear fans, but it would also draw heat away from the extended GPU heatsink....though, I guess you could say that could be a bad thing..since you're taking heat from the GPU and drawing it through the CPU heatsink...

But ehh, I'm no engineer  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)

I hope it happens when I get a 360 Elite in Europe (I don't have a 360 yet) cool.gif, hopefully this is a sign that 65NM CPU's are coming as well.

sweet my fan would blow right in that, i hope they use it. they should have put a leg on it to keep the weight off the main heatsink.

what they need to do is add more copper heatsinks/heatpipes. Copper absorbs nearly twice the amount of heat than a silver heatsink. Also i think they should get rid of the fan cover and just add more fans, it can direct itself out the xbox anyways, thats what my computer does.

It's heatpipe technology... its doing something.  Its not just floating there doing nothing and wasting money.

There is NO such thing as strain on "clamps" because there are no such thing as clamps... at least once you screw the heatsinks down. The "clamps" do absolutely nothing but keep the heatsink in place long enought to get the board into the steel chassis for assembly.  The screws and threaded pegs are what control the height of the heatsink in relation to the board and provide 100% of the retention of the heatsink.  You could take your clamps out completely and it would not make a difference.  I wish the whole X-clamp thing would just die already.

One day we may have a completely reliable 360.  Between a 65nm GPU which was apparently announced for fall of 07 and this new heatsink its possible that the ring of death will be history.  To bad there are going to be 15 million boxes out there that can die at a moments notice.

We can all hope that Microsoft will offer a no questions asked repair and heatsink upgrade regardless of warranty AND void sticker status.... yeah right.
