I think i would at least screw in the 8 black heat sink screws. Maybe not tighten them more than a quarter turn once they are flush.  Or AT LEAST the top two cpu heatsink screws because otherwise you are relying on just the crappy x-clamp to distribute the weight.

Got the 3 red rings last night and fixed it this morning using this method. Worked like a charm.

The biggest trick for me was setting the black screws back in. Ive tried putting them in as tight as possible, then tightening just enough that they are flush with the case and finally only two twists in and every time the fan goes full blast even on the dashboard. If I remove the screws entirely the fans seem to work as they are supposed to. Im going to keep the screws out and see what happens.

Thanks to everyones help in this topic, Ive brought my 360 back from the grave.

3 penny fix (for me it was a two penny fix with existing termal pad cut'em in 1/4) worked for me. I bought couple of 3RODed x360 from ebay and were going to replace xclamp with other tutorial posted here. Decided to do penny fix since experiment requires a lot shorter time and minimal hw.
First, did a wiki search for pennies manufactured with most copper. (est 1970 - 1980, contains 95% copper, 5% zinc). Cleaned it with running water and tooth brush&paste.
Second, opened x360 up, took termal pad off, cut'em to 4 pieces. took cloth backing off, set it back on memory.
Third, stacked two pennies with a bit of AS5 in between, wrapped it with aluminum tape (cut'em 1/4 inch wide 1.5 inch long)used for HVAC sealing/wrapping.
Forth, set stacked pennies on top of memory, put bottom metal casing backon, put black screws for heat sinks back in, and re connect dvdrom, power, av cable. Leave fan disconnected.
fifth, turn x360 on. 3ROD. waited about 10 minutes. turned off for 2 minutes. plug fan connector to mobo. turn it on. 2ROD.(over heat) GREAT!
Sixth, powercycle (turn off, back on) and volia! got x360 dashboard!
Left x360 with GOW running for 2 days in a garage (Avg day time temp is around 95F. temp drops to around 80F in the evening). No sigh of 3ROD. Last night, played for about an hour before turning it off. Today morning, before heading for work, I turned of x360 and everything is fine and dandy. Left it running. Will findout if I get 3ROD or not tonight.
Thanks Y'all!

i did this fix last week.. i thought my xbox was done for but it worked.. the hardest part was taking apart and putting the xbox back together.. i did stacks of 3 pennies and had probably 3 or 4 layers of the tape around it..
on the chips there was a padded glue square.. so i just cut those up and used them instead of a glue gun.. i had to put some pressure on the motherboard when i was putting it back together so i thought i was gonna break it, but it didnt.. and i had to do the towel trick for 15 min to get all the stuff to melt back together after it was reassembled.. its been working for a week now and iv played hours and hours of xbox without any problems at all.. its just like new...
thanks for the fix

Now 18 Days since I did this fix... Just played the darkness for 2 hours then watched apocalypto in 720P thats a 2+ hour movie in high definition not a single problem! My 360 is working fine still not a single crash in 18 days! no freezes just perfect maybe better than before I did the penny fix. I recommend anybody with 3rlod to try this before the X-Clamp replacement just to save yourself some time and effort believe me this does work!

Hey guys! sorry have been doing Wii mods again for the last couple weeks, But i am so glade this fix is helping so many people! It feels good to fix a 360 for so CHEAP! and its so simple.  I'd like to hear some more unique setups and tries. for example the turbo fan problem if screwed to hard etc. So I can write up a even better walk through for N00bies. Anyway keep the success stories comin!
LATER

P.S. if this fix worked for you email me at

THANKS ALL
