You would increase the effectivness of the fix with pennies form the 70's etc. but it is not needed. as for the screw question make sure all the black x-clamp screws are out tighten down slowly- leave the top off and test- if this does not work - please list what your orig problem was - the things you've done before the penny fix- and the error you get now- sorry i have been doing wii mods the lkast week and this upcoming week. so I will be checkin in periodically. I'm sure its something small. BYEEE ALL

ok? can i use aluminum tape instead of electric tape?????????????????????? huh.gif

Before the penny fix the only thing that I did was to replace the fans with wisper fans and to make sure all of the grounds were good and tight. As I listed previously the original error was 0020 and remains so. I believe everything else is in my previous posts. By the way, thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.

@PimpKillaJ

I was getting the 0020 overheating error also with 2 red lights. I used 2 pennies for each ram chip, Wraped each stack of pennies twice around with electrical tape so all penny was covered. Then doubled up electrical tape to stick the stacks to the ram on mobo (Didnt have hot glue available), When I booted up it wouldnt work was getting 2 red lights error 0020.  unsure.gif

So I towel tricked  flamethrower.gif the 360 for about 15 mins and its worked perfect ever since 12 days and counting before this fix my 360 was dead now it works better than ever!  cool.gif

Just waiting for mass effect to be releases now....  pop.gif

P.s I only used 2 pennies for each stack so was able to screw every single screw back into the motherboard and did them all up tight..

Pretty cool to know that MS charges €120,- for this, and you can do it yourself for 12 cents. jester.gif

Hi,
Recently started getting freezes, then 3 red lights...  top right one not lit,,,,

It worked on and off for like 2 weeks then totally quit on me.

Couldnt resist a fix that only cost 12 cents,,,lol

So i did it ,, with 3 pennies each stack,,,   used glue gun,,, and then put half the metal casing back,,, (the half the Motherboard attaches to),  and voila!!!   IT WORKED!!!! YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Then i put all the casing back together, leaving off all the little black screws ,, and at that point it stopped working,,, (I must have tightened the long silver screws to much).

So, then i started taking it back apart,,  got the bottom half of outer case, the dark grey plastic bottom(When vertical), and the faceplate off.  At this point I started messing with the tightness of the long silver screws,, and finally started working again!!!  yeahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

This was about 5 days ago,,, and its been working great so far.   I LOVE THIS FIX!!!! ;-).

I now keep my 360 apart, as outlined above, placed horizontally atop of my old PSP box,,, (the PSP box is placed from front to back of the 360 underneath it).   I did this because I just like the idea of as much air space surrounding the 360 as possible,   I also have a vitamin bottle, (just happened to be the rite size and was handy, lol),  placed under the left side, (the side where the hard drive is located),  to support the hard drive, since without the bottom half of the case attached,,, the hard drive is only holding on by the connector itself,,,(and that wernt kewl,,, lol).

I'm not really crazy about the idea of my 360 all apart like that ,,, but you know what,,,,,  I do really dig playin gears of war stilll,,, so it will stay that way for now!!!!

Ill post further if any changes,,,

THANKX!!!!

First of all i like to thank kidderboots for coming up with this idea of penny fix. I got my 3 lights recently and was pretty much frustated as this was my second xb360. I was browing through all the fix available here and i saw this one. first it sounded like just an ordinary fix and will work in some cases not with everyone. To be honest i was scared as it was my first experience to open my 360 and play with the internals. Then i read and followed stickboom777 post with the pictures and all. so instead of using 3 pennies i used 2 pennies ( special thanks to stickboom777 as well ). first i looked for 8 pennies and did try if i can get as old as i can. so i got mix then i ask someone to get me the electrical tape almost the same size of what stickboom777 showed in the picture but the color was red. i followed the everthing step by step and was pretty careful with the internals and opening the system. well i managed to open and used 2 penny stack on each ram and used DUNIT idea to stick the stack with the existing thermal things on the rams. finally i manged to do everything according to stickboom777. but i followed kidderboots idea and i dint put the black xclam screws on. i manage to put everything back on but not fully so i can re adjust the screws to check if the system works or not. i put all the wires together and made my first attempt to start the system. but it dint work still was having 3 lights. then i thought why not remove all the screws and check then again dint work , then i put all the screws back but let them lose a little still dint work. finally i put each and every screw back and tight them good but again the sytem dint work. then i read stickboom777 post again that ' dont worry if you get 3 light as you might need to do the towel trick' so i was about to prepare the towel and do the towel trick and last time to push the power button on my system and guess what it worked. Thanks God it worked finaly but the strange thing is that why it dint work in the first place any idea ? or may when i was keep checking the system it got heated it self and when i left the hope and was planning to do the towel trick may it got cools down and it worked ( so may be the towel trick happen iteself but no towel or anything involved ) .
p.s. my room was chilled with aircon and fan at the same time and wat i was getting  before the 3 ligths was same what stickboom777 got. i use my system verticaly since the day i bought and still played it almost 2-3 hours non stop after penny trick and still vertically. altought im going to exchange my system with a new one in one week time.
Now i came to the conclusion that xbox 360 is an unstable machine and whoever buys it make sure that keep changing it every 4-5 months before it dies on you.

I AGAIN THANKS TO KIDDERBOOTS FOR THE FANTASTIC AND EASY TRICK TO MAKE YOUR XBOX START WORKING AGAIN AND TO STICKBOOM777 TO COME UP WITH THE GREAT TUTORIAL FOR DUMMIES LIKE ME. smile.gif

Mine is still working perfectly  biggrin.gif

This is a machine which would crash after 2 mins of gameplay if I managed to get it to boot, so not bad going  cool.gif

@OPTIMUM

Thanks bro glad it worked for you and the pics/guide helped my 360 has been working for 14 days now no problems whatsoeva we all owe kidderboots for finding this great free fix!

Is anybody experiencing hotter temps than usual?

If I place my hand over the fans at the rear it is getting very hot after only a few minutes it doesn't seem to get hotter after longer but im wandering if this is normal?

It is either a good sign that a lot of heat is being dispesned out of the fans, Or its a sign that it is getting to hot becuasce of the pennies/tape would be good to hear from others who have tried this fix...

Hey, I got a question.  I did this fix, and when I put my 360 back together and powered it on I still got the 3RLOD, BUT the middle light: IPB Image was blinking.  Any explanation?  Should I try turning my 360 on again?

great fix!  The 12 pennies worked like a charm for my 360, but I had to add the black screws for the GPU and CPU for the fan to go back to normal state, with the black screws out the fan was going at full blast even after cleaning the heatsinks and using AS 5.

I had exactly the same problem the fans were running full blast with 3 pennies on each ram chip and no screws in gpu/cpu heatsinks. When i dropped down to 2 pennies for each stack I could screw all gpu/cpu screws back in teh case and the fans are at a normal state

Only thing is my 360 runs very hot if you put your hand over the fans/rear of 360 you can feel its very hot hasn't crashed or anything yet though...

CounterBlow: blinking middle light usually means that console is unable to establish a communication with dvd drive (or is trying to open/close the tray). make sure all you cables are plugged in.
