ArticSilver wont keep the pennies in place but that would be great. there is silver tape (not sure of the name) that is used in laptops that would work great. but anyway this tutorial is made so its a permanent fix and with stuff everyone shoudl have. would could start sayin stuff like why dont we just resolder the chips on better but only 7 of use would end up be able to do it you know. so everyone should have 12 pennies (if you dont email me and i'll send you them haha)and everyone should have electrical tape and a hopefully a glue gun. i tried taping the pennies to the case but didnt work as well as the hot glue. anyway keep brainstorming , but with everyday items and make sure you test first!! thanks guys

instead of using hot glue can you use silicon heat sink compound?
P.S im not sure if someone ask this question yet

a penny is about 1.5 mm thick so the end result should be 4.5mm thick and use copper equivelant. VERY important to reconnect the fans and also very important to tighten slowly and to leave the black screws out of the two x-clamps on the back. like i said before this sounds like a temp fix but non have failed even after 11 months of playing (gears of war, dead rising etc)

what is the minimum? is it 3.0 mm...?

I think this will keep the motherboard flexing even if it was 2 pennies... Why? each penny is 1.5mm and 2 pennies in 3 mm but since the ram chips are holding down it could be over 3.0mm...

the 1 penny fix?... ph34r.gif

Hi Guys

Kinderboots, excellent quick fix...took me about 20 mins from start to finish to get a working 360.
Below is just my way of fixing the 3 red lights error then using yours to really get it fixed, and hopefully once and for all.

Used two methods and the first one didnt really help but was a try...and the second (Kinderboots penny trick) worked

The first was to re-apply the thermal grease to the GPU and CPU as that seemed to be the common fault.

During this fix i done the RBJTECH FAN Shroud fix/mod...  http://www.rbjtech.n...ing/cooling.htm
This allows better airflow over the components heatsinks.

After the mod and grease application, i have read that on initial startup, you will receive the same error , but you will need to wait for the thermal grease to bond, etc. So 5 mins later i switched of and waited for 2 mins...started up again and it worked pefect.....but not for long.

two days later fault appeared again. and didnt allow me to get past the startup screen.

I read the Kiderboots penny fix....  http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=606431
which shed more light on the issue.
In South Africa we dont have pennies so i used 5 cent pieces which are about 1.5 mm thick.

My 2006-11 model unit has the thermal memory pads x 4 which are stuck on the memory chips underneath the board. they are supposed to apply pressure from below the board to hold up the chips which seem to de-solder themselves when hot and over time.....
By sticking the coins (1 each) on the pads directly and then closing up the box...which needed a slight bit of pressure as the screws are slighly shorter to screw in, i was able to fit all screws back in.
the GPU and CPU screws where screwed in but not tightly...just enough to hold the heatsinks firmly...and screw each one in a cross pattern so that they get the same pressure from each corner evenly.
Once all put together, i booted up, waited a few minutes for the chips to resolder themselves back...5 mins..then swithced off for about 2-3 mins and back on again.....It worked perfectly...

Got about 16 hours of game and movie time off the Xbox360 without any issues this weekend. this was done without any issues and errors.

Hope this helps in the fix.

cheers

Hey Guys,

So I put in fight night round 4 in this morning. Froze on me once then I tried to play again. Got a graphical error and then the bullshit rings of death. Plus when I turned the system on I wouldn't get the dashboard and the fan never seemed to pick up speed. So I tried the penny method.  Being honest here.....didn't think it would work. I used two pennies for each and tightened the black screws. Put everything back together and holy crap it works. The problem I having now is that the fan is louder then ever and racing. Did I do something wrong or is that normal with this fix?

Me again...sorry adding to the earlier post. I tried loosening the black screws and then the fan went out of control the I got two red rings.  So I tightened the screws back up and it did the same thing. So I fiddled with the screws and got it back going. But the fan is still racing....it just keeps going faster and faster. i don't want to make the system worse. Should I take the two pennies out and try three?  Thanks for your help guys

So, if I'm understanding this correctly, the reason this works is by keeping pressure on the chips, and not so much for heat transfer to the case.

If were looking to dissapate heat, will we be looking for a better transfer to the pennies other than hot glue, maybe articsilver adhesive. Just brainstorming smile.gif

I think Liquid Tape is better... They sell em at the home depot, I put some on... and it seems to work good like electric tape EXCEPT that Liquid Tape holds it.

I just made the "3 penny" fix and it works almost perfect. The fans are spinning extremly fast and are very loud. Does anybody know how to fix this?

I tried the penny fixes on both of my machines and got no positive result.  It's a good idea in theory, but in reality I don't know.  Those of you complaining about fast fans and/or 2 red lights -- it seems to me that your heatsinks have probably lost good contact with your CPU/GPU.  That is bound to happen without the 8 black heatsink screws in there.  Whatever your setup, you have to make certain that the heatsinks are doing their job and channeling heat from the processors, otherwise you could fry your box.

hello all! id just like to comment here, since i was desperate for a 0110 fix (ram) and i tried this and was having a bit of issues, first i got the common fan speeding up and 2 red lights vs 3, tinkered with the screws and got an assortment of different errors/red light combos, but in my experiance i HAVE to have all the black screws in, even if turned VERY lightly, soon as one comes out, it says power supply error, so i'm assuming its something to do with all of them being in.

as far as i know and can see...it does look fixed, but i do not have it plugged into a tv, but since ive turned it on at my desc, its booted up fine, no loud fan and with the hdd nd mem cards both in it, so i'll go ahead and try this, and hopefuly play for more then 15 minutes! haha

this is a very creative and CHEAP mod to do, and by reading has had many good results.
for those saying "this is a temp mod" ... well...what does microsoft do? send you  new or fixed model...and in a couple months to a year it dies again? that also sounds like a temporary solution if you ask me...

thankyou for this great idea!

Hey all!

Glade to see this is still working for people. BUT....

AS I suggested before please please please just call 1-800-4-my-xbox as they are ALL covered if you get an error. OR just got to xboxlive.com sign in and print out the return label. no matter what error you get just report it as 3 rings.

They dont even look at them when they get to the warehouse- they have way to many to look at to care.
I have sent them in preopened, after the penny fix, even moded. Just put it back together as new looking as possible.

This is the best fix and costs you NOTHING except for the box (THEY pay for shipping)

If you have messed up ur xbox so badly its unrecognizable then do this fix as its still the main cause for console failure. othewise...

SEND IT IN! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Thanks guys!

well i'll tinker with the pennies again, i got the 0110 error again sad.gif  would you recommend using a heatgun like ive read? to heat up the chips? is that another temp fix or does it usually last a big longer? maybe use the heat gun then the pennies?

thanks again

I've been running my penny/eurocents fixed xbox for a couple of months now (posted my workaround on the previous page)... it works like a charm.
Kidderboots is right though, if you have a RRoD console try MS first, this is always the best option.
I only resorted to the penny fix cuz my console is banned so MS wouldnt fix it anymore. Also it was the cheapest and eaziest fix out there.

If any of you guys need help i'll try and see what i can do.
The most important thing is to fidget with the black screws to prevent the fans from spinning to fast and preventing the red rings... it can be a long battle but as this thread shows it can be done!

I sent mine back after I kept getting the 3rrod after the penny fix(which lasted about 3 weeks). It was still under the warranty for the rrod ...they sent it back saying they could not fix it because it had been opened..So apparently, they are checking them.At least they did mine...bought a new one,but will still continue to try and fix the old one...
