my nuts are squeezing together on this one. Lite On is a great ODD producer and I hope it will be easier for C4E to figure this one out. I wish MS would just bite the bullet and put a blue ray dvd drive into their boxes, but I, as well as everyone else, know that it's not a question of preference, but rather a question of investment.
Microsoft is probably trying to reduce their costs in manufacturing and also increasing the security of their boxes. (Not to mention they can't put in a blue ray dvd drive, but only HD DVD. How weird.)
This also may be MS's time to increase the reliability of the drives, that is to say, they don't like the bad press of all those boxes reporting hardware errors. If that is the case, then good job on their part! IMO MS is still learning how to make a great, stable gaming system and it's important for them to keep updating the technology. As far as the gaming 'hacking' community is concerned, I have no doubt in their ability to circumvent any future security issues, like FW updates.
I think this whole post may be off topic. I'd like to say though: good luck to MS to create a more solid gaming console! Also: good luck to C4eva and company to produce a more solid firmware breakthrough!
P.S.
If MS is ordering lite on drives, will they support HD DVD? or maybe Blue ray? or is it simply an upgraded FW-hacking-defeating drive? This type of speculation is deserving of some skepticism, but I'm kind of new, so bear with me. Thanks!
