I've never understood why Sony's controllers got such high ratings.  I can't stand the D-Pad on 'em, and they aren't real smooth or contoured.  I hate those things.  I think it's just that tons of people have spent tons of time with 'em, and so have fallen in love.

Also, I'd echo what many others have said.  The N64 controller sucked.  Period.

6 Button Genesis controller FTW!

The 360 Controller however has it all, but the sticks and dpad seem to be second best.

acctually the sticks on all playstation controllers are poor at best, they are horrible for controlling things and not to mention the left one is in the wrong place.

they are even worse than the dreamcasts and n64's sticks.

1. N64
2. Dreamcast
3. PS1/2
4. XBOX

N64 stick location was perfect. Sadly, they were not resistant.
PS1/2 had simple, light design perfect for long rpgs laugh.gif
However, the PS1/PS2 dualshock model isin't incredible. Joystick design and location isin't good.
Xbox's pad fail since the DPAD is crappy. Sometimes, when you press left, it triggers down..
Very frustrating with retro gaming.  grr.gif

Can't say for Xbox360, never tried so far.  tongue.gif

No genesis 6 button? I loved that controller.

And no way that N64 controller should be on that list. I mean yeah, it was the first console controller to feature that many button and an analog stick, but it was definitely unwieldy.

Totally agree with the SNES controller and 360 controllers.

And jaygould30, Im with you on the PSX/2/3 controller. I hate it. The double bumpers are annoying. If they had one lower down like on the 360, it would be great, but it just ends up feeling clumsy. The dpad on that controller is the worst too. If you do any dpad heavy gaming, you thumb is just sore as hell afterwards.  And I hate the analog sticks on it too. Being so used to the N64, Gamecube, Dreamcast, and Xbox, the Playstation analogs feel like they dont have enough resistance.

Not surprised to see 360 controller at first - exactly where I'd put it.

How is the N64 controller even on the list?
Other than it added the joystick to Nintendo's systems... it was a pain to use, and what idiot that made it thought that kids had 3 hands these days?

Hey, the duke was awesome. Never diss the duke. For someone with big hands, it was amazing.

It annoys me that the PS2 had tons of fighting games, because that d-pad SUCKS! Every time I play for a few hours on that thing I get blisters.

I have to say though... I'm a big fan of any controller with slots for memory cards / whatever. And the winner of this group is the dreamcast! That controller won last gen, even if the console didn't.

you gotta be off your damn rocker to put the Nintendo 64 controller in the top 5.. hell you'd be crazy to put it in the top 50.. u get like 3 games of goldeneye per controller before the analog becomes completely useless and the "but you have the good controller excuses start... the only way you could consider it good is if you had an endless stream of new ones arriving daily.

2. saturn controller version 2
3. genesis six button
4. super nintendo

Ps2 controller is the best by far

I disagree here... it's overall good but it's analog stick placement is it's main problem especially for first person shooter games as the XBox "S" (not bulky crap)/XBox360 controller is clearly more "natural" feeling. (basically more comfortable to use) ... plus racing games the XBox controllers triggers are FAR better than PS2's pressure sensitive buttons (just feels better in racing games like Forza 1 on XBox which im a HUGE fan of which the trigger play a BIG part in the gameplay... where as ps2 has pressure sensitive buttons for GT4 which they work somewhat good but xbox's method is far better feeling)

QUOTE(stormz @ May 25 2007, 05:26 AM) View Post

yea i agree, the 360 pad was a fucking joke. you actually had to move your entire hand to get to some of the buttons- not a very clever design if you ask me. also the analog stick would break after about 3 months

the shape of the 360 pad is perfect as are the analogs but the only thing wrong is the D-pad. its pretty muc h useless. its still the best pad out tho

i strongly agree here with the stuff thats in bold!... as the only complaints i have with the XBox360 controller is mainly the D-PAD (to hard to press down! sad.gif ) "AND" the LB and RB buttons as there located in a odd place. although generally speaking it aint to bad for the games i play which are mainly racing games etc so they generally aint used much from me to really complain much about em, but IF i did have to use em in alot of games that would suck.

1#.   PS2 Controller
2#.  Xbox 360
3#.  Wii Remote
4#.  Dreamcast
5#.  Atari ST Joystick

PS2 had the best Dpad and Analoge sticks easy and was light, easy to use and generally good.  The 360 Controller however has it all, but the sticks and dpad seem to be second best.  Wii remote is obvious because its such a good idea, Dreamcast due to the triggers and look, and Atari ST joystick cos i grew up with it.  Worst controller ever;

WORST - XBOX ORGINAL (BIG MUMMA)

It is the worst thing ever  WAAAAAAAAAY too big, bad buttons, bad sticks and huge triggers.  Complete tat

i definitely disagree with what you said in bold above... cause even though i agree the dpad aint the greatest on the xbox360 controller the analog stick placement is far more natural feeling (and easier on the hands) than the ps2 controller is.

i agree about the original (big) xbox controller sucking... it aint really bad, but comparing it to the XBox "S" controller , the S controller is overall far better feeling in your hands.

i gotta disagree here even though i like xbox360 controller quite a bit more than the ps2 controller on the whole (im a big forza fan so xbox360's pressure sensitive triggers are a MUST over ps2's controller which sucks in this area) ... i still think your a little hard on the ps2 controller's analog sticks... my main complaint about the ps2's analog sticks is the "positioning" that there at on the controller... not as natural feeling as the xbox360's is.

-------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------

but anyways now onto my comments on what controllers i generally feel are best...

1.XBox360 (wireless) controller as it's "core feel" is great in your hands! (and this is my best controller feel in this sence) ... my primary complain is the D-PAD as it's "to stiff" although it does feel durable on a more positive note about the D-PAD besides the stiffness it feels overall solid. (definitely better than PS2's d-pad as that kills your thumb if used for extended periods of time) but anyways, my second complaint is the LB and RB button positioning... but since most games i play generally dont use these buttons much i guess it aint the end of the world but i had to use these LB/RB buttons alot this would SUCK.

2."Logitech" (wireless) XBox1 controller ... this is my favorite XBox1 controller (the original bulky controller pretty much sucks if you compare it to the S controller, although it aint really bad or anything) ... but anyways... the D-Pad on the logitech controller is just great, MUCH better and easier to use than the stock MS controllers (bulky crap or S controllers) as it's loose feeling but it reacts well in fighting games (mainly speaking mortal kombat) ... but for the negatives about the controller is if your already used to the official S controller is that pressing the XYAB buttons takes slightly more pressure otherwise it wont register in the game (takes a little while to get used to but overall for me aint a issue) and the other noticeable change (for some people could be bad or good) is the feel of the triggers as they use less travel to get same reaction in a game. basically take Forza Motorsport for example (one of my favorite games on the xbox1) is that controlling RPM levels on the engine is noticeably different from the stock S controller as the S controller requires you use more travel on the triggers to get same reaction on RPM gauge (which technically would be easier i guess) than the logitech one which requires less travel which can be a little harder to get RPM gauge where you want it to be.... but besides these two negatives (overall dont bother me once i got used to it, im still just as good if not better than i was with stock official ms S controller) the controller is top notch... you can tell it's a QUALITY made controller by the overall feel of it... it's easily the best 3rd party controller on the xbox1 if you ask me.... all the other ones i used feel "cheaply made".... also the analog sticks feel pretty good to me... i did not notice any real change there from official s controller to the logitech one (atleast not on forza 1 i did not) as they basically felt the same as far as in game reaction to on screen reaction etc.

3.(probably) PS2 Controller. ... it's a overall good feeling controller even if it's analog sticks are not in the proper places (i.e Xbox controllers in general) ... but this controller is clearly worse than a xbox controller when it comes to simulation race games (I.E. GT4 vs Forza, forza's a much better game in it's core gameplay i might add) as the pressure sensitive surface buttons on the ps2 dont feel as natural/good as the triggers on the xbox controllers for these sim race games.... plus it feels easier to controll the engine RPM on a xbox pressure sensitive trigger vs ps2's surface buttons.. (technically u could use the analog stick on PS2's to get more precise controlling but that feels more awkward then just using it's surface buttons) but to me thats even worse... either way the xbox controllers triggers are far better when is all said and done for sim race games where controlling engine rpm is a MUST.

ok now where leaving the "nowadays stuff" so controllers like snes/n64/genesis etc etc ill be comparing to "there time" and not nowadays games since they would SUCK on most games nowadays (i.e. shooters/race car games etc)

4. i cant really say as it depends on what games i play but it's close between alot of controllers.. but from what i remembered back in the day... i know genesis was great for games like mortal kombat cause of it's 6 buttons on it's surface as that was ALOT better (basically it's the ferfect setup for those games, as u cant get any better) than SNES controller cause of the button layout Mortal Kombat games where far better on a 6 button surface vs snes's crappy 4 buttons with two triggers... feels awkward. .... dreamcast's controller felt overall solid in your hands but nowadays it's just to dated as it lacks dual analog stick and as everyone knows nowadays it's pretty much expected but for it's time it was a solid controller .... but i did like the N64 controller overall myself for mario 64 and games like goldeneye etc.

but i think i already said more than enough now and most likely no one will read through all that stuff lol. o well, if someone gets something out of it .. it was worth writing wink.gif

The n64 controler was amazing! People who think you need 3 hands are stupid and have not used it.
it was 2 controlers in 1. quixk switch you have a d-pad next switch you have 360 pad. people just get too confused and scared of it.

1, n64
2. wii
3. ps2
4. dreamcast
5. xbox 360
