Tutorial : X-clamp Replacement - Jewel Case-method

That Gpu is getting waaaay too hot. I put on an extra fan on top of it and my 360 played on without a hitch. Then when removing the extra fan the 360 froze after about 10 minutes. I wrecked my extra fan by sticking my thumb in it knocking off some of the blades.

I am going to try to reverse the flow of air so it blows cool air over the two heatsinks. Sucking air just doesn't cut it. Maybe I'll buy some of those ram-heatsinks from Zalman.

I don't think blowing air in the case is going to do anything good.

If the air can't escape the console properly your going to end up with a build up of hot air, which obviously isn't good.

.. which prooves you haven't solved the problem.  If thermal movement is enough to break the joint, then you need to 1) fix the board firmly and 2) push the BGA pins onto it hard - The original X Clamps do neither of these things ....

Just out of interest, have you done the air flow divider mod ?  It tackles the lack of airflow over the GPU with a simple card divider.  This ensures that 1 fan is dedicated to the GPU rather than the CPU hogging all the airflow (which it doesn't need as it has an ample heatpipe assisted heatsink).

In my setup there is an incredible difference if you turn the fans around. I think I'll mod the fans that way. I'll probably make some modifications to the casing too.

I have never seen a pc where either the cpu or gpu fan sucks the air into the cooler instead of blowing it through. The air displacement is offcourse equal on both sides of the fan but a compact stream of air is wat provides better cooling.

There is room for a small 4cm fan next to the hard-drive for sucking out the hot air.

A heat-pipe system would probably be the neatest solution.

This is an attempt to get rid of the heat. I removed the inner parts of the fan and now I am concocting a way to re-attach the fans to the other side of their casing.

Successfully turned the fans around today with the use of Pattex Super-Putty. This stuffs great! In like 15 minutes it turns as solid as plastic.
Anyway the 360 is now running with the fans still on standard speed and it has not frozen up to this point.

I am still looking for a good 12V point to connect the fans and a pot to.

filling the case with hot air...why didn't we all think of that  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy.gif)

stop comparing the 360 to a pc, it isnt one. But on that note, most pc's have exhaust fans. Theres a reason for that.

anyway since you insist on doing this, there is a great reliable 12v spot under the powerplug on the board, check the case/hardware modding faq for a full list of power points.

Thnx for the tip. I will see if it chokes or not. It probably won't on the standard setting because the air displacement is equal on either side of the fan. Maybe it'll implode on a higher setting (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Iet Vorks! I can feel air coming out of the grey top and bottom but the biggest part of it comes out the sides of the console.

The fans are practically running at Warp 9 so my next step is to make a fan-speed mod. Instead of the standard drill-a-hole-and stick-that-pot-out mod I intend to make an invisible fan regulator using a trimmer. I hoped that there would be space enough at the back behind one of the air holes nut there isn't much.

this is my idea if u have a fan blowing in air u must have a fan sucking out air
in my case with my 360 i did the replacement method but not ( modify bolts and washer asembly to best suit my m/b) wht i did was puit a 80mm fan directly ontop the gpu and use th stadnard fans to suck air out all the fan are running under 12V and i did the the little divider think for an duct
i mounted the dvd out side the case srry i don't have any pics acasue llama is down

You mean the cpu. The gpu's the one under de dvd-drive.

Most of the heat now(Video DVD) comes out of the top next to the hdd. I think it'll do fine with just blowing in the cool air.

I still have to do more testing. Maybe a the towel trick to get the 3rol back and see if it clears up on it's own.

This is what my 360 now looks like from the inside (the outside's unchanged). This is probably the hardest way to turn the fans around. "Then why did you do it like that?" Because I thought I needed the shroud, which I don't anymore. The fans bundle the air into a compact but strong stream. This is much more efficient than sucking the pre-heated air off of the rest of the board. Also the faster, fresher air does not allow hot to build up by the sink. It cools the hotspots of the system first. The heat exits the box via the grated sides of the inner case. It ran for about 7 hours with the casing closed before I got tired of it. When I get my PT15 potentio meters I'm sure it will run very silent.
