the other thing depends on how you burn your discs- iso9660, udf/iso or udf.

if udf/iso there is an option in the xml file that will tell xbmc to treat the disc either as udf or iso

as far as i know those are the only xbmc dependent settings that could affect playback of cd/dvd media, anything else and it is a problem with the drive, but i assume you are using able to boot games up fine? I know you're Ritek man so i doubt it is dodgy media

That and I am using a Samsung drive.  Mine actually reads Memorex DVD-RW (contains the Ritek DVD-RW dye).  Anyways, I just converted the file to an XISO using Qwix and it boots up fine.  It did go to the black screen after booting it up again.  As for burning them?  I have no idea.  I just used Recordnow Max and burned the files in data mode (at least the DVD-R).  The weird thing is that if I use the PS2 Reality media player on my PS2 it will boot up the AVI files that I have on CD-r without a hitch.

The codecs are the biggest issue if you intend to watch movies off additional cd's.  Has anybody tried to add the codecs to the dvd that contains the videos?  In the proper directory structure..  Might be sufficient. Although annoying.
