Power Supply Question
« on: May 01, 2007, 03:43:00 PM »

Ok, so heres where im at.

I had a 360 that was made back in May of 2006. During a mod a week or two ago, i got the 3RLOD (due to a messed up capacitor).
So i went out and bought a new Core 360. But when i went to use the Power Supply from my old 360 (May 2006), i got a 3RLOD error. Ok, so i just hooked up the power supply that came with the new 360 i just bought and alls fine and well.

Well after taking the new power supply out of its plastic housing (my god did MS not want you to get that thing out), im getting a Red light error on the power supply (the best i can see if that the metal sheilding around the power supply was soldered directly onto the power supplies PCB board and during disassembly i lifted a little of the PCB cover off, nothing big)

So my question is this.....how do i make the power supply from my old 360 work on my new one?
Is it even possible?

Power Supply Question

Well after further review here is what i came up with.

On the Old 3-pronged power supplies, there were 4 black, 4 yellow, a red and a blue wire.

On the New 2-pronged power supply, there is the addition of a green wire. And green means ground.

So, taking into account that and the fact that the connectors for the 360 mobo are exactly the same, is it the ground prong on the old power supply that is causing the 3 red light error when i try using it on the new 360 mobo?
Would it be of any use to cut the ground wire going to the ground prong and try it again?

Help is greatly needed and appreciated. I dont want to have to buy a new power supply.

I've got both types of PSU, and use them interchangably with Nov. 05 and Sep. 06 consoles.

Power Supply Question

Thats just odd. I swear, when i got home, i immediatly plugged my old power supply into the new 360 and got a 3 red light error. So i than plugged in the new power supply and it worked fine. But now the new power supply is broken (i suck), so i need to use the old power supply, but everytime i do i get a 3 red light error.........

So i guess my question is this:

Why wont my old Power Supply from May 2006 work with my new 360, February 2007?

Figured it out.

It seems that on all the Power Supplies theres a metal casing that goes around it, kind of like a giant heatsink. Well, MS decided to solder that metal casing directly to the board in 3 places (i think it also acts as a ground, as one of the solder points is right next to the ground wire for the plug). And in removing the power supply from its housing, those solder points were pulled out, on both the new power supply i got and the old one i have, which is why i get a 3 red light error when i use the old one.

So, while i dont want to have to buy a whole new power supply (but i will just because i want to get this mod done with), what could i possibly do to fix the solder problem (no traces where lifted, only a small peice of the PCB board around each solder point)? Is this easily fixable?

I'd try resoldering it, it's not working as it is anyways.
