It powered down except for the fans and after it finished cooling off, I closed the drive manually by pushing it in.  Now when I power it on the drive doesn't spin up and when I press the eject button it doesn't respond at all.  Does this sound like a dead drive or what?

I tried that, it doesn't.  The drive doesn't even eject.  I took it apart to see if anything was happening and when I power it on all that happens is the laser moves a little as seen here.

the eject band might have slipped off? pop the tray open with manual eject about half way and in the middle left under the tray, you will see some wheels with or with out a band. try tapping the tray after you hit the eject button for a quick check. if it opens when you tap the tray, then the eject band is stretched and needs a new one.

edit: assuming its a samsung drive

My bad, yes this is a Samsung.  I followed your directions and I saw the band was still there and tapping the tray didn't do anything.  It's like its not even receiving the eject command.

Same exact thing happened to me today. 360 overheated, 2 red lights and the dvd drive ejected with the disc still spinning. Drive will not respond at all. What do we do?
