Xbox 360 HDD Transfer Cable in the Wild
« Reply #30 on: April 20, 2007, 07:22:00 PM »

i believe there was an interview a few weeks ago with one of the guys from MS, where he said you can call MS up for a FREE transfer cable if you need one with the Elite. Now, whether or not MS will stand by that is another matter - from what i have heard a lot of ppl have been struggling to get a decent response from MS customer support that doesn't sound like it came from someone with less than 3 brain cells. SIGH!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

heres some useful info, that we might have overlooked concerning the data transfer. Taken from xbscene herself.

QUOTE
In announcing the Japanese launch of the 120 GB Xbox 360 hard drive, a Microsoft Japan press release revealed some additional information about migration of content: most notably, that the data from two 20 GB drives cannot be combined onto one 120 GB drive.

I've translated the pertinent part of the press release:
* You can only move data from the 20GB Hard Disk to the 120 GB Hard Disk. Transferring data in the other direction, or any other combination, is not possible.
* Any data stored on the 120 GB hard disk will be automatically deleted.
* Any data stored on the 20 GB hard disk will be automatically deleted after it is moved over.
* You cannot put the data from two or more 20 GB hard disks onto one 120 GB hard disk. If you attempt to move multiple drives, only the last one you move will be stored.
* Once you move the data over, it cannot be placed back on the original hard disk.

I think you're misunderstanding what I was trying to say.  The point I'm trying to make is that it looks like the cable IS included with the Elite, contrary to the original post in this thread.  And that this particular cable, from what I see looks like it pulls double duty not only for audio, but as the transfer cable from old 20gig to new 120gig HDs.  I guess we'll all find out next week.

oooh, doubt it. VERY much doubt it. These are some up-close images of the cable "in question"

edit: sorry that the pictures are so big, they were the first ones i found

I got the 120GB HDD also.

And i checked and yes the official Microsoft adapter will work with Xport (atleast).

I would try to 120gb but it is in my 360 right now.

It took about 1hr and 30min to transfer all my data.

Dang, you guys beat me to it. I just saw the 120gb at BB.

At least we know its 100% for real. Now theres just the question of it coming with the 360 elite. I hope they've revised the elite accessories so it does.

edit: does anyone know if they added it to the 360 elite package, or how i can buy one seperately?

I was wondering the same thing so I e-mailed Xbox support.  The official response is bend over and buy one seperately.

Microsoft should have just placed a normal A-B type USB plug in all the 120GB HDDs for transfer.  Everyone with a computer would have the cable already.  Then they would provide the software on their site like they do with the BC updates.

But I guess that would've been too easy.

I just finished installing my 120GB Hard Drive and was wondering if anyone else who has one has noticed a speed increase in load times?  I mainly tested Live Arcade titles.  I first noticed it when chosing Arcade Games and the count of available titles pops up. It counted them up significantly faster, normally I can read the numbers as it checks the drive, but now it counts faster than I can read jumping from 1 to 31 titles in 2 seconds.  I also tested the recent mini golf demo and the load screens between holes was noticably faster as well.  I don't know if this is due to the drive model, or if maybe a defrag was performed during the data transfer session, but it IS a noticable difference.  Maybe someone can investigate this further.

Note, before doing the data transfer to the 120GB I used my xport 360 to create an image of my original 20GB drive and then once the transfer was complete I used the xport to re-image my 20GB drive back to the condition before transfer.  So I am now able to swap the 20GB drive back onto the 360 and use it as it was if I need to and I used this to test the speed difference.  It takes the 20GB 7 or 8 seconds to count up 25 arcade titles and the 120GB takes only 2 seconds to count 31 titles (some demos and videos are installed on the new drive during the transfer session).

well its good to ehar that it is faster. the 20gig model was starting to get on my nerves as it was taking so long.

i think the speed might be due to different brands. wait and see i guess, if yours slows down, then we know its because of fragmentation

Did anyone try this with Xplorer360? I tried with the 20GB which was empty (didn't know that until I read that it was emptied after transfer here) on Virtualbox with USB host (I run Sabayonlinux) and it detects and installs it. Xplorer360 however, hangs when opening it. It seems that the cable contains a Jmicron controller, at least accordingly to Linux.

According to MS the HDD/cable/PC may get damaged when connecting the transfer cable and X360 HDD to a PC. It's bs right?
