Unplayable Disc Questions
« on: April 18, 2007, 08:29:00 PM »

I have a hitachi 360 since launch and for about a month it has been having issues, now some games wont even load. But if I play another game for a while and warm up the system then insert a game that wasn't working it loads fine. Also if I get a game to load it has no problems playing. I figured it was the laser so I ordered one online. My Questions are:

Is it the laser or the motor?
Do I need to tweak the pot on a new laser?
Any guides on installing new laser?

I'm having the same kind of problem. Most discs are reading, others are not (the minority I might add). I'm going to try the Pot Calibration this weekend and I'll let you know how I get on.

Yes! I thought my son was crazy when he said it needed to “warm up”
I said , “do you think MS used tubes instead of transistors?”
But here’s a likely problem you have.

Remember to mark the motor screws first , and TIGHTEN them
Up first noting the exact number of turns so you can put them back the exact same way.
Also a possible problem is a dirty laser.

Okay, I did the pot calibration and it worked a treat. To be honest I probbaly didn't do a great job of it though. The multimeter I had was a bit useless (not 20K setting). The tiniest move seemed to do it (I didn't even think it moved because I didn't have a screw driver small enough).
