I wanted to add a couple of leds to an ethernet cord (yes the cord itself), so I guess my question is which wires are positive/negative and how much voltage is carried through them.  Sorry for my noobishness (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Doesn't work that way; you have a transmit pair and a receive pair.  Putting a load on any of these wires will cause your network connection to stop working.  You can't mod a patch cable that way.  I suppose you might be able to mod a power-over-ethernet cable, but that's a different issue entirely...

PoE simply supplies a voltage (48v I believe) over the unused pairs - it has nothing to do with the ethernet signal...
