Toshiba Dvd-rom Laser Or Motor Problem ?
« on: April 15, 2007, 11:23:00 PM »

Hi everybody !

This is the problem I have with my Toshiba drive in my Xbox 360. When I put a game in the drive and close the tray the Laser goes ON for 1/2 seconds and after the laser unit move backward & forward with the laser off and after 10 seconds I get the OPEN TRAY message on the screen.

I'm wondering if the problem is from the laser or the motor. I tried the POT tweak (I tried 4k, 3,5k, 3,2k & 2,8k) I tried the Rubber mod (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Df5xjUOcLlI) Any advice ? or suggestion

Watch the video http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5774526067597318661 (I show 2 times the laser goes on & Off with the unit moving backward forward)

Thx.

Now it is ! The problem started before, I modded it to see if that will help and no luck. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)
What do you mean by "free spinning".

I'm almost pretty sure it's the laser but why the laser goes ON in the beginning ?
and if I push the laser unit my self and open the tray and close it, the laser unit doesn't move, it's stay there.
so that's why the motor might be dead BUT when I shutdown the 360 and reopen it the laser move to the front.

The laser can light up and still be bad. Like the lights are on in the house, but no one is at home.

See if the motor spins easily, with your finger, give it a spin. If it spins a couple of times it's probably still good. If it feels like it's sticking or dragging then it needs to be cleaned.

Thx for all your advice ! very appreciate.

Now this question might sound stupid but I just want a make sure that I'll know what I'll have to check tonight when I will come back home (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

IS there a motor for the laser unit that make it move backward and forward (the track) and a motor to spin the DVD ?.

I don't really know how the motor works on a DVD.

I prefer to ask (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Thx again !

I will let you know !

dude i have the exact same fucking problem... but the laser works when i fuck with it for a while...

try playing around with ribbon cable from the laser to the board and manually move the laser to certain spots of the disc

i cant see it being the laser for me though as the laser is damn near brand new to begin with

all in all, my laser when it does work it works just great.. at some points say in saints row if i leave the game on pause the laser will turn off after its not being used then when it comes back on it does that noise..

but once again as i say my laser is damn near brand new, its from a 360 purchased for xmas, and wasnt even modded until a short while ago (about a month ago).

same story also, wont read originals nor backups when its in that state.. but when i can get it working it reads everything like normal.... when a  laser dies, it gets weak.. and the first thing wed see gone was backups.. after they go then ur original shit goes.. the fact this happens out of the blue makes me think aswell as someone who proly repairs these things for a living think that its something besides the laser

@ Specter - Yes there are 2 motors, one that drives the sled and moves the laser back and forth, the other drives the spindle the disc sits on. Both motors aren't what you really think of when ya think of an electric motor. The Spindle motor is a brushless type that it pulse driven and has about 10 wires, so there's no easy way to just take it out and check it. The Sled motor is a stepper motor and can be checked, but has to be done a certain way also. It's pretty rare for a motor to go bad in a CD/DVD drive, the worst that uaually happens with the 360 so far is the motor just gets really dirty and doesn't spin freely, then jsut a good cleaning will fix it up.

@ iLLNESS - Not all lasers will go weak first, some can/will die right off the bat or whenever they feel like it and even though still light up are essentially dead. Have you tried the Rubber Band trick on your drive?

Ok now I really don't know what to do..

I installed the new lens and I removed the Solder point !
I tested Music CD and it works fine !
I tested DVD Games, Movie, Xbox 1 original games and no one works.

I checked the pot and both are at a very good settings.. but I even try to change it and no difference.

The only different thing now is when I put a DVD, the disc start to spin at a certain speed, and everything the lens is not able to read.. the disc goes a little faster and you hear a little sound (ziiiiit, lens try to read and after,, anoter ziiiit)

It does that for 5-6 time and after the disc stop.

Another wierd thing..... I tried to put back the original firmware and after the flash (restore) the disc didn't spin at all !.

I had to put back the hacked firmware.
do you think the original firmware is corrupted and the fact that I created the hacked firmware this the original firmware it can cause that !?!

Where can I found another original firmware (I have my Key drive)

Thx a lot again.
