I have a system from December 2005 and sometimes it will crash while playing a game. I have had it crash durring Crackdown, Gears of War and Rumble Roses. I can turn it back on without problem (no flashing lights). I was wondering if replacing the internal fan with one of the many replacements on the market would be a good idea. If so which one would be the best fan to replace it with?

On a side note, which replacement case brand is the best?

If it's locking up more and more often then the damage is already done, it's just going to get worse. Sticking in new fans now or upgrading the thermal compound (even changing yer case) is just going to make it worse since you'll be putting all kinds of stress on the thing and flexing the motherboard, ever so slightly, but that's all it takes.

it only freezes every once in a while. Maybe every 5-10 times I play it may freeze once. And it will only freeze after playing for a few hours.

You can stick new fans in it, or set a couple on the side to force some more air in there, but taking it apart is really only going to aggravate the problem. Stick a fan or two on the outside of it and get some more cool air in there to see if it really helps or if a still have lockup issues before ya go tearing into it.

If you have an extended warranty send it in to microsoft or get a new one from your retailer, otherwise an external cooler might be good. It seems like a common problem with launch systems locking up irregularly.

If you are still looking for a replacement fan then I hear the tailsmoon fans are good, also thermal pads under your memory can help as well.

This thermal pad you mention, is it a special one for the 360 or just something that would be used on a pc?

Anyone recommend a good replacement case? I am only asking because I have heard good and bad about alot of them.

The weirdest thing about my overheating problem is it only seams to happen for certain games or sometimes not at all. I Played doa4 for a few hours last night followed by an hour of the xbox 1 game dead or alive ultimate and had not a single problem at all. I have also had times where I have played Rumble Roses XX for 4 or more hours without problems. The game that seamed to cause crashing most offen was crackdown. I only had it happen once or twice with gears of war. Strange Huh?

Not really strange at all, it's all just a game of whether or not your xbox 360 gets hot enough to freeze. I recommend not replacing the fans, it seems to me like a waste of money, and I read a thread where the talismoon fans don't actually make a difference, that he actually measured the temps and compared to stock, they just chug more air, the temps were no better. I'd simply go to the guts, do lawdawgs( it's pinned in this forum ) tutorial... It works fabulously. You could also put some tinfoil over your heatsinks about 1/3 the way down it towards the front starting at the white fan cover, I've seen that around and heard it helps.

Your case doesn't seem too serious so just a little would give it enough to not freeze probably.

The other night the worest thing happened. I got the dreadded 3 red lights.  The evil tech support people made me pay to fix this terribly defective piece of garbage they call a game console. Reguardless of what fake sob stories this stupid indian guy makes up (he made up some lame story about him having 2 consoles that broke and he paid full repair price, total bull really) I will not feel good about having to pay to repair something that shouldnt have broken down in the first place. I have had my original xbox for quite a few years and never had this problem. I personally thing microsoft should have waited a year like sony did to get the bugs worked out of their system instead of unleashing defective garbage on the gaming public and then making us pay for their mistake.

That was a bit harsh, the kid was just venting some frustration. I know it's all been said before but c'mon. I'm sure he's twice as angry now.

I honestly doubt you would feel the same way if it had happened to you.
