(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Error 0020 Successfully fixed with LAWDAWG0931 method. Instead of waiting 2 minutes had to wait 6 minutes and never turned from 3 red to 2 red. Let it cool off and success.

1. Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.

Bought the system 3-4 months after release, only just 3ROD'd when I got Mass Effect (no relation I am sure, but still an odd trend).

Not sure what the secondary code was before as I forgot to check.

10+ hours over 3 days so far.

I used the Lawdawg method w/ some older AS (3 or 4 or something).

I must have read the guide wrong.  I used the Lowes parts and put the screws in directly onto the motherboard, not onto the metal bottom plate (the graphic didn't make it clear that you need to go through the plate).  The board fit back into the case and was only slightly misaligned in the front (which easily pulled back into place with the screws).

Do I need to worry about the board warping again because of the way I re-assembled it?  Will the screw heads act as standoffs as in the MKI and possible help the situation rather than hurt?

hey,

i just tried the xclamp mod- and it worked a treat. I ended up only using 1 washer on the gpu, which was the only way to stop the rings. Also- the first time i booted it up- it froze and gave me two rings (overheating), and has worked fine since.

cheers!

Hi

I just bought a broken Xbox 360 - it was coming up with the 3RLOD(code 0102) and the warranty had already been voided.

I originally tried the towel trick, but that didnt work.

I followed the xclamp replacement tutorial and it's now working (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) the three lights came back on after i was finished, so i left it running for 5 minutes then restarted it - now its fine.

I fixed my two Xbox 360's this past weekend with this method...thanks to the guys that put the replacement online...I'll be fixing my brother's 360 this coming weekend...he's got the same issues as well...unfortunately we both bought two 360's before this fix came out...now we'll each have two 360's in the house...what a waste of money..........but I love the console.....

Fixed the 3RLOD two weeks ago. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.

Used modified Lawdawg0931's method since I'm in Canada and I couldn't find everything needed. I skipped the fiber washers and used spacer washers instead of flat ones. The mounting holes are already isolated and it should do the trick perfectly if you can't find fiber or nylon washers...

THANKS SO MUCH FOR REVIVING MY 360 !!!!

Unfortunately it seems there are some consoles that are simply beyond repair . . . . .

I have an original launch machine.  It recently started giving me the 3rlod with error code 0102 so I decided to try out Lawdawg0931's method . . . . I'm an experienced rework technician with high level soldering skill (I can easily do a board full of 0603 pitch components and TSSOP ICs by hand with a fine tipped iron), and didn't feel like waiting a few weeks for a warranty repair.  The MS sticker was intact at this point and I could have gotten a free repair, but I decided to deal with the issue myself.  Given the overwhelming success of the xclamp replacement method I figured it was no big deal doing it myself . . . .

But I was wrong.  I replaced the xclamps with Lowes hardware and AS 5 and did the overheating step . . . to no avail.  Then I tried using just one washer instead of two and only managed to change the error code from 0102 to 0020 and 0023.  (This would seem to cement the belief that 0020 and 0023 are GPU solder joint related issues)  Adding back in the washers changed it right back to 0102.  I then went to the heat gun method . . . . . again, to no avail.  At this point I inspected the GPU with a magnifying glass and realized that the ENTIRE PACKAGE was warped!  One side was completely lifted from the motherboard, with broken solder joints clearly visible.  There's simply no remedy I can think of for such a badly damaged BGA component.  No matter how much heat is applied it won't matter if half the chip isn't making contact with the motherboard!

I guess in some cases there's just nothing you can do short of buying a new GPU, solder stencil, and solder paste and then reflowing the whole thing.  And that's just crazy.

Did this mod now on 5 xbox360 and have worked with no problems except for 1 which I had to retighten the screws. I did however change it a little bit by using rubber O-RING (5/32 x 9/32 buna-n) washers in place of the nylon washers   O-RINGS HERE.  They will hold the screws in place so there is no need to tape them on the back and it helps with adjusting the height.

Fixed 3ROD - don't know which error code was.

RoD (console laying down):

CODE

______________________________________________
|   _ _______                                 |
|                                      \      |
|   - __   __                        \ /      |
-----------------------------------------------

Used AS5 + hybrid method (mostly Lawdawg0931's but also taken Rbjtech's in to the equation - thank you both) on GPU/CPU heatsinks:
CODE

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | |
::::::    :::::::::::::::heatsink::::::::::::::::::::::
     _    _   metal washer           __________________
     _    _   Nylon washer           |      GPU/CPU
......    .............................................
     |    |              mobo
......    .............................................
     _    _   Nylon washer

       ^
       |  M5 Bolt goes here....

Internal metal case not modified/drilled (not needed)

At first, I just hand-tighten the bolts (with no fans) and used the heatup phase to re-solder GPU/CPU to board (I did noticed some bending on the mobo) waited about 4-5min with no change to 2RoD (overheating). Without letting it cool down I tighten (attention: cross tighten bolts) with a small driver until it's real tight - after that no more 3RoD! Still without fans on, I let it overheat and waited 30sec to 'cook' the solder then unplug the power suply. Let it cooldown for about 5-10min reinstalled everything and as far I can tell all is running smoothly - as this console wasn't mine (it was of a friend of mine: when he got 3RoD without warranty - misplaced it, I guess - he went running buying an Elite) so I don't have any games (or even controller) so I can give it a little HEAT.

The xbox360 internals were in a very dirty mess (beware!)!!! Lots of dust, cotton and such (the console is just about one year old) - it took me some (lot) of time to get rid of that mess (I rub most everything with an old tooth brush to free the dirt). I could notice the heat marks (GPU heatsink) on the lower bottom of the DVD Drive and at the top internal metal case (CPU heatsink) also, the copper of the CPU heatsink was heat-colored (!) and the thermal grease of the GPU was all over the top of the GPU and it was a pain in the ... to take (most of) it out!!

I'll be doing some additional mods to improve air flow and thus lower temperature: at first the metal mesh at fan output will be trimmed off then I'll try to figure out if there's any need for adding an extra fan to take fresh air inside.

Once more, thanks...

[Edit]:

I'm a bit worried about the little bending that this solution causes on the motherboard (it does exactly the opposite of the x-clamps), probably I should had been more conservative and use 3 washers instead of only 2.

Does any one revert these steps without problems? I ask this because off bending and possible de-solder due to actual tension (bend) on GPU/Mobo...

well, after reading further threads here I took some actions and lose a lot of tension over my 3RoD FIX. there many ppl reporting that the problem (3RoD) come back after some time (6 months or so) after these fixes and become somewhat permanent (irreversible) to us mere mortals...

I lose much of the tension on the mobo (loose the bolts) as carefull as possible to prevent these 'appenings'.

Think about this: We're complaining about bad desing on the x-clamps but the the FIX does exaclite the same think in the interface mobo/GPU anda mobo/CPU but in the oppopsite direction. Therefore I´m not suprised the problem coming back in these conditions...

Given a xbox last week. Been messing with it since.
Errors 0102 for the most part until i started baking it with no xclamp replacement.
Errors jumped from 0103 and 0110 and back to 0102.
It would work after some bakes, but overheats much too fast.
Added a fan to gpu heatsink.
http://www.pxn.ca/images/xbox/xclamp_fanmod_fixedfornow.jpg

Canadian Tire didn't  have what we needed, pretty small selection. Didn't try home depot.
Rona was next door to Canadian tire.

Nylon Washers
Servalite  229-M Nylon Flat Washer No.10 - UPC 039008000071  (5 per pack, square white packet.)

Metal Washers
Servalite 284-B Metric Washer 5mm Flat - UPC 039008000019 (singles)

Bolts
Servalite 247-K Metric Phil Machine Screw M5 X 10mm Pan Head - UPC 039008000071 (gen hardware upc I guess?)

I've only done the gpu xclamp so far as one bolt i picked up was a size too big.
Finger tightened the new bolts, with washers, plugged in and let it bake, tightened 1/4 turns on each bolt, twice while cooling. (only waited a minute or so after unplugging)
Let it cool, and booted right up and appears to be stable, we'll see.
After the gpu fan, the cpu heatsink is cool to the touch during assassins creed.

How durable are the nylon washers to heat, are they a timebomb?

I tried the 12v mod on the fans to try and create more flow but it's too loud, hopefully this will be sufficient.

Thanks for the tuts, while not a complete fix for all, is seems to fix the base issue.
Remember if this works for you, get the gpu cooled as best as you can to try to prevent it from getting hot enough to do damage again.

Appears to have fixed the problem. Only a matter of hours and a number of heatups and cooldowns to see what the true outcome may be. No freezes or artifacts or slowdowns to speak of so far.
