Initially fixed my box last year with the MKI method, and it worked for about a week. Got the 3rlod and re-applying the x-clamp mod wouldn't fix it no matter what.
I waited a while until I could find something to make a shim out of, and re-applied it with the Llama bake method.

Works flawlessly now after a month with some new Talismoon fans in place of the stock ones.  biggrin.gif

1: Fixed the 3RLOD. No issues at all now, no freezing, works fine.

This was a launch console that had been in a retail environment for 6 months prior to my acquiring it due to a store closing, so it had been on 24 hours a day for 6 months.  It ran fine up until a few weeks ago.  Then the console went down the week before GTA IV was released.

It took me about 3 hours, total, using tools I already have.  I only used 2 washers underneath the board instead of 3.  It's been working fine, averaging 4 - 8 hours of play per day since then.  (Which is about what it was getting prior to crashing - this was a non-returnable console, so I had to fix it myself.)

Using some kind of adhesive cleaner on the chips is the only way to go.  It was SO gunked up in there I'm amazed the thing lasted this long.

Llama method, primarily, X clamp replacement.

(Same as May, just joined to post results.)

OMG!  It works!

At first I figured, "This is stupid, it isn't going to work."  But at the cost of about $5 for the parts and $10 for the Arctic Silver, I had nothing to lose except $15.

In the end my 360 works again.  This is amazing.

I used Lawdawg's Method.

I was able to fix one of two using the xclamp method. MIND YOU, I had to do the 1 penny per ram chip fix because the board would not bend the right way.

The biggest thing I found with this fix is that it is really revealing the XBOX 360's design flaws. The motherboard warp and the GPU's seating into its socket is seriously compromized by the slightest movements.

Once you can get the xbox to boot, getting it to NOT overheat is tough. You have to adjust the screws as the XBOX 360 is on and playing a videogame. I used 2 stools to sit the xbox motherboard with everything plugged in, and adjusted the screws and listened for the fans to not run so damn fast. Once it sounded normal and silent, i left the screws the way they were and repeated the same thing with the case screws. Adding the black screws for the CPU xclamp (which i did not remove) caused the GPU to come out of its socket, and gave immediate overheating. Just using the silver screws slowly one at a time while the xbox was running allowed me to make sure i was not stressing the board.

Now everything works great after everything is put back together, the fans are running slowly and i have been able to play many games for hours.

NOW the other xbox? it cannot boot, it will not boot, I've repeated the same procedure, and i have tried to cook it for 4 minutes, while keeping the CPU nice and cool. It does not work. The towel trick was tried by my friend several times with this unit, while the other had only been done once with a towel for 10 minutes. TOWEL TRICK IS BAD, DO NOT USE IT!

I've looked over both methods and researched everything i could on the 3RLOD. I decided to keep the x-clamps. i made the decision after receiving my 360 back for the 4th time and continuous searching for a correct repair. xbox kept sending it back in worse cosmetic shape and messed up dvd drive and fans. I replacedthe metal spacers between the heatsinks and the mainboard on both ends with nylon spacers of the same thickness. I removed the heatsinks to clean (all that cheap crap microsoft calls thermal paste) with some computer thermal paste. *Did anyone have any aluminum squares between the heatsink and the processors? I ask because mine had some.*

I replaced my stock fans with the Talismoon Whisper Max fans and they are amazing (not using the l.e.d option). Since my 360 was an attempted fix by the xbox repair team if you can even call them that after the way mine came back multiple times.

This last time it came back it had new fans/new heatsink extending from GPU/new dvd drive. After taking close inspection of the mainboard with everything off i was looking at photos online of the different boards and it looks like they replaced my board with an Elite board but without hdmi support which is very strange to me.

I was out a system from Nov. 14th 2007 to April 9th 2008. VERY EFFING SAD. (Got new wireless controller and PGR3...."ALREADY OWNED IT!!!")

My console was in working condition till the other day - May 6th, 2008 - Until I got the 3RLOD AGAIN. So I did my investigating and found that so many people have sent in there consoles and they come back with problems.

If anyone is looking at any other internal parts i would strongly recommend the whisper max fans just because they move so much air in the system and keep everything ok.

I have yet to come across a problem with mine since i did the mock-up on the 7th which took me about an hour. i did the overheating but waited 15 minutes and then turned off the console and then back on after waiting 45 minutes. i have been timing the amount of time my console is on idle and running dvd's/games and it has ran for almost 31 hours total with 3 hours of idle dashboard time. Played gta for about 11 hrs straight.

As a side note. i have noticed that things load quicker. things being like dashboard applications like the side blade and applying themes.

Ive had my launch 360 in the closet for the last 6 months due to RROD and had bought a new 360, Well today I decided to try Lawdawg0931's method and it worked flawless, I did everything as described including the overheat step and all went as planned, I got all the parts at Lowe's using the supplied part #'s in the tutorial, The 360 has been on all day without any issues or freezes.

Thanks a million.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

Xenon (Release date console) was RRoD for a few years - Used a kit purchased from llamma (and followed their directions) and it works perfect. Ran the console for 5 minutes (during overheating process), let sit, and now works. However, I do not know how long it will last as I have not played any games for a long period of time.

Falcon console purchased less than a year ago and already RRoD - Installed a kit in this one as well and it too works perfectly. I ran this one for about a minute before I stopped the overheating process and it works.

Both consoles play homebrew and store bought games flawlessly (besides the fact the laser is dying on the Xenon - MS28). Both kits installed in the consoles were bought at llamma (nuts & bolts). Bought 4 kits and cost me $25. Both consoles were turned off as soon as they showed they were in working condition & can play games; HB or store bought. As of now, they still haven't been on for more than 5-10 minutes so lets hope they last. I would recommend this fix to anyone who has had a RRoD problem (and lost their warranty). BTW, my falcon died while just sitting there turned on (360 dashboard) and a game wasn't even in the console.

+2 to the list (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

OK. did it last night.  After installing it I turned it on and imediately got 3 lights, i was kind of pissed but I shut it off, installed the hard drive and it worked fine. I played 20 min game of NHL09. turned it off put the case back together and played Hockey for another hr then left it on for a total of 3 hours and it seems to be ok.  I am not quite sold because I don't know why it 3RLOD.  Like I said I fixed the original 3RLOD 1/2 yrs ago and it was running fine since then.
