I'm having a look at a friends 360 and luckily its the same model as mine - Hitachi 59dj with SF HD-63 Laser.  So I swapped lasers 1st and his works in mine and mine has the same issue in his!

The drive doesn't spin, it eject fine, the laser adjusts itself and moves down the guide (if pushed to the far end of the laser unit runners) and laser light flashes to detect disk but nothing else!  Just get open tray in Dashboard.

It looks like the drive is stuffed so I then thought I may as well Flash it and it was detected and flashed fine so all I can think is one of the motors or something?

I have tried 2 original games, CDs, DVD movies then after flashing I also tried 2 backups - no difference (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

The 360 hadn't been opened until I got my hands on it and all ribbon cables are undamaged so don't know what else to try.

I also tried the 1mm piece of plastic stuck to the white plastic laser guide (that pushes the tiny button/resets the laser unit guide - or whatever it does).

Any ideas?

take the center spindle out, clean any dust/hair off it, relube it (really well), and put it back together.  Make sure the spindle spins easily.

And if that doesn't work, take a look at the motor to see if you can't find a replacement somewhere online.

this is the fix to these shitachi motors.. works everytime the motor doesnt spin.. remove motor then top part will come right off

Looks like you've found my problem.

OK I've taken the centre spindle out and yes it is stiff as hell!

It looks OK to the eye, no hair etc.  What is the best thing to lube it with?  WD40 or some other lube?

a clear oil like vegetable oil... and my problem i stated was fixed i just had to adjust the hieght/tilt of the motor

Yeah used some 3 in 1 oil and spins a bit better, the laser picks up the disk sometimes but not all so I'll try the height/tilt adjust later too - this won't affect the laser life will it (so a different thing to the laser intensity adjustment?).

Well I still can't get it to work!

I've gone through all the guides, tweaked the pot, adjusted the height of the lens, everything I can think of and it still won't read disks!!

If I press down the disk in the drive (with the cover off) I can sometimes get the laser to detect the disk and start to spin but every adjustment I have tried won't get the disk spinning with the drive fully back together, I spent 2 hours last night tweaking, putting back together and then again...  No good.

I suppose the only option I have now is to replace the full DVD drive with a working one (then change the key).

Any ideas where to get a decent priced drive in the UK?  I've looked on ebay but dead/3 flashing lights faulty 360's are still selling for £60-£90!

Hi , had same Hitachi problem here. Removed spindle motor and lubed with
heavy mineral oil spins way better now , but I forgot to note
the height/tilt on the two “spring” screws of the motor plate.
(I assume that’s where to adjust the height tilt ?)
The spring screw are backed out about 1 turn each and it working
But only about  a quarter  of the time. Any help on adjusting the motor
Would be appreciated.

i snug tightened them. then loosened them every 1/8 of a turn. the tighter the screws the further the disc is from the laser. i got great reads at 7/8 turns counterclockwise. sometimes i get good reads at 1-1/4 turns. just test it out. youll know when to stop cause the reads will get worse. or the disc will start rubbing on the laser assy.

Thanks, yes  just over 1 turn seemed to be the “best” .
went all the way out to 2.5 turns and didn't scratch the disk.
I think the tilt must be off a bit so I was going to leave one screw at 1 1/8 turns
And adjust the other  screw back and forth.
also "upped" the DVD pot a tiny bit (-200 ohms).

 i think both screws have to be the same. i think the key to it is keeping the disc "level". i fixed a drive by adjusting it to the "best" read. then i tweaked the dvd pot, and it worked flawlessly. if it still doesnt work id buy a laser off ebay. it should cost you no more than $23 shipped.

Super Cleaning the Laser Module


Hi again. Here’s my follow up.
I fixed two Xbox 360’s with hatachi / LG drives this way.


Well, after cleaning and lubing the DVD drive motor which would barely turn,
adjusting as best could the height /tilt, and blowing out the laser,
cleaning the outside lens, and also doing the pot trick (4.4 to 3. it still only read about a quarter of the time.
I thought for sure that the laser was dimming or burning out,  
Anyways I thought for sure the laser lens module needed to be replaced and figured I had nothing to loose
trying to fix it so I rinsed the laser module out with 99 percent alcohol and now it works like new .

I did this as follows,

1- remove the laser module as though you where going to replace it

2 carefully remove the identification sticker

3- with a clean bottle of 99 percent isopropyl  alcohol , clean all the grease from the
Sliding holes/points on the outside of the laser module

4- with clean hands ,put the module in a small clear glass jar and barely cover with isopropyl alcohol

5-swirl gently for 3-5 minutes and look through  the jar towards a light. You will see
All the junk floating around in the alcohol

6- remove module and shake out, pour  dirty alcohol out of jar

7- repeated  steps 4 to 6   10 times, yep 10 times. until the alcohol looks clean

8- wearing eye protection of course, carefully blow module out with canned air to dry and replace sticker.

So what do you guys think? is this a good way or not?
