Is It Time For A New Laser?

Sounds like you've tried everything up to a new laser, so go for it. If the noise you hear is kind of a squealing chirping sound it's just trying to read the disc and can't, that noise can be pretty loud sometimes.

I wouldn't say that backups being first to go is a sign, but they are a little more difficult to read than a pressed disc is. Since you've already done the rubber band trick, POT tweak and tried different burns of your backups then you're next step is to try the laser itself. As fast as the technology is the read speed makes little difference and you want it faster to load faster anyway, since the HDD isn't used as a cache like the XBOX one was. It may help some in reading some backups being set at the slower speed, but that's mainly for the noise difference. In either case, if the laser is gonna die, it'll die.

have you tried adjusting the height of the disc? it works good for me, i repaired a few ps2's and 2 360s that way. but after some time, the lasers do finally fail.

Yes I'm using verbatims.

How do you adjust the height of the disc?

try this http://forums.xbox-s...howtopic=590592

what i did, with the 360 in particular. was i adjusted it every 1/8 turn. and kept testing til i got the best reads. i was being dumb and left the 360 plug on to save me time from taking out the drive. i lifted the drive vertically to adjust the screws, and i kept on adjusting every 1/8 turn. just try whatever was easyest for you. if this doesnt work. then your laser is your best bet. for one of the systems i adjusted the height to the best posible readings, but it didnt work that great, so i did a pot tweak. and it has fixed it for now, until the laser comes in.

its not easy to mess up. i just adjusted the two screws evenly, what i did was i fully tightened the screws, then i untightened them at 1/8 turns at a time. i marked the screws with a sharpie. then i just kept unscrewing til i got the best posible read. i knew when the time to stop was, because it would read worse. if i remember correctly, the tighter the screws, the higher the disc is from the laser. i got the best possible read at 7/8 turns, with the last 360. on the other 360 i believe it was 1+1/8 or 1/4 turn, that got me the best read. so it requres alot of tinkering. but since its something you havent tried its worth a shot. or you could just wait for the laser.

Yes that's a Hitachi drive, but the Samsung's screws are in roughly the exact same places, just #1 philips head is all.

this is not how you do a samsung.. a samsung is adjusted from the top by to black tabs on the laser bars... do not mess with the motor at all.. use a pair of tweazers to adjust the laser tilt

Here they are so everyone else can see what we're on about. Make sure ya mark the spots ya start from, they might already be marked and there's an arrow on the adjusting screw so ya now where it's at. Clocklwise raises the laser assembly (decreases the distance to the disc), CounterClockwise lowers the laser assembly (increases the distance from the disc).
