Nas For Use With Xbox 360
« on: March 29, 2007, 02:50:00 PM »

Currently using:

Xbox 1.0 with Xebian fullly installed as a NAS/server/downloader:

2x 300GB HDs

Samba to view shares over entire network from any computer/xbox1

TwonkyMedia to stream shares (audio only) from Xbox360. I dont have wmv files so I dunno if it shares to the 360, and the Xbox1 isn't powerful enough to transcode on-the-fly. with WebUI tocontrol from any PC.

Azureus for various downloads. with WebUI to control from any PC

MoBlock for IP blocking.

Works great. If you want 1TB, then I guess get 2 500GB HDs. If you want to transcode your videos on the fly, get another desktop powerful enough to do that and set it up to serve. As far as the other things you want, I think you'll probably be better of just getting a small computer and installing Linux or Windows and set it up to do whatever you want...set it up so you can control it remotely (SSH or VNCServer) and shove it in a corner permanetly connected to your network.

Nas For Use With Xbox 360

ydgmms-Thanks for taking the time, unfortunately xbox1 is not an option for me. Already have x360 on one and was hoping to find a solution as described to justify buying another for the second area. Was hoping for a NAS solution because of power efficiency and portability.

Guess I could put an always on PC with massive storage on my network, but still have not solved quality streaming issues.

Even when I convert files to WMV and use WMP, quality is pretty average, not much better than streaming through ORB. Might be my conversion process, but still pain in the *ss to convert all the files.

Funny, I can't seem to find any study or report identifying the biggest streaming options (ie xbox-1, xbox-360, apple tv, eva8000 and the lot) and comparing their quality. I don't mind plopping down the dough if I know I'm gonna get the results.

Also it would be great if there was a resolution/frame rate/compression guide based on TV type/size, guess I'll just have to keep playing with it.

Question still open- What is highest quality streaming option to XBOX 360, and what with xbox 360 and NAS? And how do these compare to EVA8000 or APPLE TV, or any other PC to TV streaming devices?

Thanks again all
