I Think I Bricked A Ms28 (e64/e65, Vcc Method)
« on: March 22, 2007, 03:35:00 PM »

i made the mistake to flash the drive of a friend of mine... now i think i bricked the whole thing. :/
i used the vcc method as i had no via controller available... the drive doesn't get detected on my pc, and even worse, when i boot up the box without the wires crossed, it goes straight to the e65 screen, or takes a bit longer to get to the e64 screen.

so i thought: hey, no harm done, i'll just solder a 22kOhm resistor back to where i desoldered it in the first place and everything will be fine, but: no chance :/

i didn't even get to the point where i can readout the orig.bin and now i'm stuck with a (possibly?) bricked drive and no backup at all.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

regards,
Bocki

get the via sata card and give it shot that way.  If you dont get the key off that drive then you are really screwed!

would buying a modchip help? i'm thinking about buying one to fix this issue, but from what i understand it just patches the firmware on the fly, and is not bypassing it completely... and at the moment it looks like that'S what i would need (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

any other options?

do not beleive that a modchip would change anything, the chip requires a fully functional drive as a basis to operate.

sorry man   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) ,

well, i've been messing around again today, and i came to these results:

when the vcc switch is "on", my pc recognizes the drive sometimes, but mtkflash can't read the flash (it detects the wrong flash chip)
when it's off, my pc doesn't recognize the drive at all.

it seems like i seriously fucked up. thank god that xbox core systems are now cheap...

or does anyone else have better ideas?

You can give it to someone to fix it, your not totally fucked up. Man, I have to admit, ms28 is one of the hardest drives to flash!

there are people who'll fix this? (what if the eeprom is damaged... without a drivekey there's no chance at all, right? ;) anyone in or around austria (germany, switzerland, hell, all of europe would be good enough)
i'm willing to pay everything less than 100euro (of course only if this is working in the end)...

(seriously, this samsung drive is pure hell... i've been modding consoles since the ps1 and never ever bricked anything, this including an xbox 360 with hitachi drive ;)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleeping.gif) I am amazed that you guys still are messing with these issues, do not spend any money having some one repair this, you are getting ripped off. You can not BRICK a MS25 or a MS28 drive unless you physicaly demage it like dropping it or shorting it out. What you need to do "IF" you have the original key backed up is "HOTSWAP" the drive. U can use any SATA device to do this HD or DVD drive off your computer. Use the bad flash method of flashing and disconnect all other devices from your computer so you know the sata chip set only sees this device before attempting this. I took both drives and bad flashed them in many differant ways each time I was able to get a good flash back to the 360 drives. Research TEXTBooks post in the forums and read. I assure you this can be done and you can do it. IF you have the original Key from the DVD rom drive backed up.

It pisses me off to see people making a buck on somthing other people have already done and shared here.

You also mentioned that it is detecting the wrong chip sometimes....

Discnnect ALL other IDE/SATA devices when you are attempting this and it will help.
