Help Identify Components - I Screwed Up
« on: March 18, 2007, 04:18:00 PM »

Can someone please help me identify some missing components on the underside of my 360 main board.

I was trying to clip one of the X-clips back onto the GPU with my pliers when I slipped and took off a couple of components.  I found a CAP and put it back, but didn't notice the others were missing till I put it back together and got the three red lights.

Under a magnifier I noticed another CAP and a Resistor appear to be missing.  Here is a photo of the area:

These are so tiny that I have searched my work area and can't find them.

Could someone PLEASE take a photo of the area on a working board and post it.  I'll then try and identify the parts and take them from another spare board.

Thanks to whomever saves my life.

I hate to be Captain Obvious here, but if you have a spare 360 board then just get the parts from there at the same places. wink.gif

C2P19 - Cap
FB2P2 - Ferrite Bead (jumper wire w/ferrite around it)
C2P4 - Cap

If you mean from just any old spare board from whatever you wont get the correct values by just looking at them.

What secondary error code are you getting on this thing now too? May as well learn something new from it as well. wink.gif

Thanks for the photo and explanation RDC, very useful.

I presume I could just use jumper wire for the ferrite from your description?

I don't have a spare 360 board, though I do have a second 360.  The wife would kill me if I opened that one and broke it too.

The error code I get is 0021 which is a DVD timing error according to the guide.

Thanks

Yes you can probably get away with replacing FB2P2 with just a jumper wire or 0ohm Resistor, though the correct part is still the better way to go about it. It's most likely what is causing the error code as well, unless there's more damage somewhere else or firing it up with that part removed caused some more unseen damage.

Your C2P19 cap seems to still be in decent shape, so you can probably let that one go unless you can get a replacement for it.

The C2P4 cap value may or may not be critical, might not even really need to be on there at all, but I haven't done any real looking to see where it goes and what it does, so replacing it with one from another board (360 board so ya have the correct value) is what I'd recommend doing.

I have already soldered C2P19 in place, even though its not the best job in the world.

I will just ind a cap that is the same size as  C2P4 on different board and hope for the best.  The trace does go somewhere and I suspect it is the cause of the DVD timeout.

At the moment I have nothing to lose because it is not working at all.

If anyone has an ESR meter, then I would be really grateful if you could get a reading for C2P4 for me.

Thanks again

If you look at FB2P2 you will see there is a small pad to the right of it.

Could I solder the component from the original position on the left to this pad?  I think the trace has been lifted on the originial pad.

Or, does the position of the bead left or right set a jumper?  It does look like the pad is joined so it shouldn't matter.

Thanks

Yes, the spot to the right of FB2P2 is connected to it. It's a TP (Test Point) and can beused as an alternate spot to solder onto if the pad there has been lifted.

Well I found and resoldered C2P19.

I soldered a 0 ohm resistor in the place of FB2P2 to the test point as recommended.

However, I couldn't find C2P4.  I removed a similar looking one from a totally different board and used that.

It now boots up and the three red rings error is gone.

Boots into the Dash but there is a problem with the DVD drive.  It floats between Reading, Open and Closed and the tray will not open.

Looks like C2P4's value is critical.

Is there anyone with the equipment to read the value of this capacitor for me?  I would save me the cost of having to buy and entire new board and I would be eternally greatful.

Alternatively, would anyone with a duff board be willing to desolder it for me and send it on?

Thanks in adance

It may be critical or there may have been some other damage done to it while it was run with those components missing or ya coulda stuffed it by installing the wrong value part and running it. That's why we don't fire up things with parts missing or different values installed unless ya know exactly what they do. wink.gif
