Hello wonder if i could get some advice.

My 360 is 2 weeks old and i flashed the firmware to the latest available approx one week ago. Was playing a backup that has worked perfectly without problems and i decided to turn console off with wireless pad. I shut the console down and there was this loud noise coming from the 360. It eventually went and only lasted a few seconds.

I tried turning the 360 back on and it turns on but the dvd drive wont read any games or music cd's, just says unplayable disc. It makes a small noise like a whir but doesnt sound like its reading anything, definately less sound than there was before tonight.

My question is has anyone had this problem and how did they resove it?

I was thinking i might have to replace the dvd drive but can you buy them anywhere and do you have to get the same brand/model dvd drive?

I heard something about keys, would need to transfer a key code or something for a new dvd drive?

Im absolutely gutted at the moment. The mode B and flash went perfectly and the console has been working fine then just crap (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Im even thinking of opening it up again and opening the dvd drive but doubt i will be able to solve the problem, reckon it might have just died young!!

One last thing, dya reckon i could try mode B ing it again and try the firmware out or maybe try another one,

Which is why I recomend people with a 2 week old system leave it intact and keep the MS warranty until you know the box works well.

To solve your specific problem...

You just need to extact the key from your current drive and place it into a replacement drive.  There are tutorials in the tutorials section on how to do it.  You do NOT need the same drive type or firmware.  Check ebay or the BST forum for a replacement...

Thanks Havok, yeah i guess i should have waited a while.

Im going to open up the dvd drive and see what might be the problem, but what causes these faults? Is it the particualar drive you have or is it a side effect of the firmware mod?

Searching for competitive prices on dvd drives now, and if i have the choice now i think i will go with one of the samsung models.

Ok well i put the dvd back in mode b and flashed back to original firmware and tried originals and music cd's but still said unplayable.

You can hear the laser trying to pick up like a whirring noise that last maybe 3-4 seconds. I also noticed the top of one of my backups around the centre hole is scratched and worn slightly on the top!! This must have been the horrible noise i could hear just before it stopped working.

Like i said earlier this noise occured as i was shutting down the 360.

I know i should have waited to see if my 360 was gonna be ok, but seeing as thats in the past i need to decide whats best next.

Changing a laser if thats what the problem is would be cheaper but there is no guarantee thats the problem, so i think getting a samsung off ebay is the way to go, but they are on the expensive side and all the way from hong kong when i live in the UK !!

Can i just ask, is this a regular thing for dvd drives, especially Hitachis on the 360 and whats the likely cause?? just a faulty laser? or could the firmware have doen this??


Im off to bed now to sleep on the idea of ordering a replacement, the sooner the better coz i need to play my games (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

No more questions folks coz i have fixed it.

A guy called T3rry on here replied to someone with similar problem and pointed out it could be fixed with a drop of superglue  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

The magnet that brings the clamp down to fix the disc and stop it coming loose had broken away from its mounting holes on the bit near the laser. Applied glue in recess, put magnet back in, left to dry and hey presto it works super sweet. Probably explain a few crashes i had been having also and why my dvd disc was all scratched and worn on top along with the awful noise i heard.

its simple the motor that the disc sits on has a magnet in the middle..sometimes it comes unglued and it comes out of its recessed hole... i have found if it sounds like it is spinning quietly and not for long and not a spin stop spin stop spin stop then it is the magnet everytime in all cases i have seen..
