As the topic says..  I recently went to use my controller and it doesn't work anymore.  When I plug it in, it very briefly flashes the #1 and #3.  I'm hoping that's an error code and that someone might know "what's up"..

I don't use the wired one often (lol), but found myself in the position of needing it last night..  Controller has no function, obviously no controller # led is lit (after the 2 that flash briefly once together).  

I've used it on the PC before, and I checked it on there as well and it did the same thing..  In addition of course no controller is listed.

Pull the quick release connectors apart, the part right behund the USB plug, and see if any of the contacts in there are bent.

Same thing happened to me yesterday but it was a used controller i bought in a package off a guy so i am not sure if the controller was broken or if it was the USB ports on my 360 as i have never used the 360  before. is there a way to test the USB ports or is this definitely a controller issue? any fixes that anybody has ever tried?

Same lighting pattern? (#1 and #3 flash once right as it's plugged in.).

I know it's not the usb port(s)..  PC one is used all the time.  And while it's not the same, I can access my flashdrive on the 360 via all three ports just fine.  I'm positive it's something in the controller/wiring, least in my case.  Just hoping to get someone on here who's like, "oh yea - That happened, crack the controller open and check this or that"., which is my next step. (cracking it open).  Because it came with my launch box, and I'm certain the warranty is up on it, lol.  Only prob is, it's the only wired one I have, so I'm not certain the guts are going to match any wireless ones enough for testing (you know, with the wireless one not having the same circuitry inside, lol).  Just sucks because yea, it's old, like a year old, but heck - The thing has been used all of 1.5 hours TOTAL I'm betting..

Honestly haven't seen that problem before, I mainly receive Wireless ones to work on, and yes they're not a bit alike on the insides except for where the main parts are, Sticks, Triggers, Buttons.

On the PC, do you get the sound it makes when a USB device is (dis)connected?

Have you tried flexing the cord along the entire length of it, seeing if there may be an open/short somewhere?

I have a Wired one here that does work, I'll see if I can get it to act up the way yours is.

Awesome, I'd appreciate it!  As far as your questions:

On the PC, it does NOT make the usual audio sounds upon plugging/unplugging.  I did try flexing the cable, though when I crack it open tonight that will be one thing I check is continuity on the wires.  When messing with it on the PC (because I figured I'd have a better chance for some visual error/clue than hooked up to the 360), there was one time, when I shut the PC down, leaving the controller plugged in, that when I powered the PC back up, the entire ring was lit solid.  I unplugged it at that point, and it went back to the #1 and #3 thing..  Future trials at a cold boot did not do that, so..  Not sure if that will mean anything or not..

On a good controller 1 and 3 light up first, the 2 and 4, then they all blink, then go off, so it looks like your controller is at least trying to start.

The only thing I know of off the top of my head that will kill it for use on the PC and 360 is the security chip in it. With it removed though 1 and 3 stay lit and the controller is still detected and shows up, just not useable.

Look for an open/short on the D+ line somewhere (Green wire). With it open I get 1 and 3 to light, maybe a second at most, then goes out. With it shorted to Ground 1 and 3 light for a very brief flash and that's it, fraction of a second. The controller isn't detected in either case. I'd say the cord or quick release connector is most likely causing it, but it could still be something else.

What is a security chip? what does it do and how do u get around it if it is the problem

This is the problem i am having, 1 and 3 light for a second then go out and controller is not detected what do you mean about when u have it open it does this... when the controller is opened or when the D+ path is open (ie not connected properly)

Yes same pattern. My controller is third party tho, and i dont know if it ever worked because i got it in a lot with a broken premium system, everything else in the premium lot worked tho (minus the mobo it was giving me flashing lights) how do i test this controller in windows... just plug it in?

yeah just plug it in. it can get the proper drivers from the windows update website automatically

You don't "get around" the security chip, and if it was the problem the controller would most likely act like I stated. All controllers for the 360 have this chip also, not just the M$ ones.

When the D+ path is open/shorted my controller gave me the same issues you guys are having. I'd look at the cord and quick release connectors first, then start in on the guts of the thing.

Well i fixed my controller it was a connection issue as RDC suspected i didnt have a pinout of the dongle so i dont know what line it was on, but when i took the USB dongle off the controller i noticed one the pins inside was not springing like the other ones and figured it was not connecting. so i played with it, got it to "pop out" but everytime i plugged it in it would pop back in too far and not connect. So I cut the USB dongle and cut the wired controllers cord, then soldered the wires together and electrical taped it all up and now it works fine. So i would definitely say that exitrooster you have an open or short circuit on one of ur wires. Try the D+ like RDC suggested.
