Need Help Getting Internet Connection
« on: March 04, 2007, 04:41:00 PM »

My pc has a wireless internet connection.  Is there a way to connect the 360 to my PC with the ethernet cable and get the 360 online that way?  I cant find anything describing how to connect with this situation.  The only other way I can connect is if I got the wireless adapter, and I dont want to/cant spend the money on that.

Help please!  Thank you!

yes, you can connect your 360 to your pc via a cable if you want. you will have to set up static IP's. you will then just run the ICS wizard (Internet Connection Sharing Wizard), and that should set it up.

you will obviously have to have your pc on to game online

Thanks for the reply.  Would you mind going into detail a little more?  Im a little noobish when it comes to networking stuff.  I really appreciate it.  I called Xbox support and the indian guy told me I had to either connect it directly to router/modem, or buy the xbox adapter  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

ok...let me just confirm something:

you have a wireless internet connection, which is via a separate card in your pc, right?

well then all you need to do is buy a cat5e ethernet crossover cable (you might have one), and connect it to your pc and xbox 360. set a static ip on your xbox (e.g. 192.168.1.100, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.1.101), and your pc (e.g 192.168.1.101 subnet mask 255.255.255.0).

then, run the Internet Connection Sharing Wizard (search for it in the help on your system), and run through that. the rest of it should be self explanatory

Yeah, I have a wireless card in my PC.

Right then, I think I gotcha.  I just need to go pick up a crossover cable then, couldnt find any in my box o' cables.  Ill post back if I have any troubles.

Thanks so much!!  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I'm pretty sure you don't need a cross-overcable as the 360 is auto MDI-X - meaning it will auto create a cross over cable for you in it's hardware if it detects it needs it ...  Plug the cable in that came with the xbox and check the link lights on your PC's network card - if it lights up, then you're good to go ...

PS - I assume you're doing it this way (with the ICS) because the remote location of the Xbox with the wireless router ?  If not, and you can run a hard wired cable - then I seriously suggest you do this.  Using a PC as a WAP and Router usually sucks...

Cheers, Richard.

Ok, Ill try it with the supplied ethernet cable first.  And yeah the router is in another room so I cant run a cable directly to it.  I cant move it either because I have a fiber optic connection and the wire is run into that room.  It would be too big of a project to re route cable to my room.  Its not like cable where I can just plug a modem in to any cable coax socket.

Would I be better off just waiting and getting the Xbox adapter?  Also, Ive found ethernet to wireless bridges for like $50, would this be any better?

Yep - they are better than using the PC as a bridge that's for sure.  yes the external bridge is a cheaper but less practical way of doing the wireless connection from the 360 to the router, not sure how much difference it is in price vs the official bridge - if there is not a lot in it - then I'd opt for the official one.

Alright, well for now Im just going to rig it up this way.  Eventually Ill be able to get the official wireless adapter, but after having just spent $500+ on Xbox stuff, the ghetto way will have to suffice.

yeah that should work. usually you have to plug them into your pc first to configure em' up, but that shouldnt be a drama

Do I have to disable DHCP on my router first?  If so, will that affect the other computers in my house connected to the wireless network?

no, you dont have to disable DHCP. all you need to do is plug it into your pc so you can set up the wireless security part of it.

I run a crossover cable to a PC running a UB wireless adapter and I didn't have to set any static IP's.  Just set up the internet sharing on the wireless connection.  This is with XP, so I'm not sure if other OS's might be different.
