Heatsink Help
« on: February 24, 2007, 02:41:00 PM »

Hello,

A few days ago i was playing crackdown and then all of a sudden i got 2 red lights (overheating) so i took appart my 360 (for the tenth time) and put a fan on it all night leaving the 360 off. I woke up 12 hours later and then tried it, after 5 min of play the same thing happend again.

I have been reading up on it and some people suggest upgrading the thermal paste on the heat sinks and some times there not even touching al the way. Well i have orderd some Arctic 5 paste from newegg so that will be here in a few days.

I have managed to take the heat sinks off (very hard) and i cleaned them up by removing the paste and what not. I tried to put them back on to see how hard it would be and its very tricky...

Does any one have any tips to put them back on, i dont want to break anything on it so im a bit worried.

Let me know.

No, the paste isnt here yet, i was jsut trying to put it on to see how hard it is before i do it with the paste..

It just seems hard i dont wanna break anything when trying to re attach it.

don't press directly on the end of the x brace. ya gotta press in the middle so it flexes and snaps on , if you
try pushing it back on by pressing right at the end you'll find it kinda binds more.

Sounds a sensible approach to me  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleep.gif)

The main pain is holding the heatsink square whilst you do the clamps. GPU first, CPU 2nd.

The best way to do this is by resting the heatsink on a raised platform (block of wood etc) so that the mobo is being held in the air by the heatsink legs.  Place the clamp in place making sure it's the right way around ... make sure that middle plastic bit is all lined up with the holes etc.

Now pressing just on the middle bit of the clamp - press BOTH arms diagonally opposite each other first until they snap over the legs.  CHECK that they are securely in the grooves of the legs.  Now do the remaining two arms - they will be tighter than the first two.  Don;t be afraid to use a bit of pressure - just make sure you always do it on BOTH diagonally opposite arms at the same time - ie keep the pressure square.  Double check all your clamp arms are in the heatsink leg grooves before proceeding to the CPU - same method, but this time you can remove the wooden block etc and just rest the heatsink on a table or whatever as it's the highest item on the board.

I hope this helps.
