Sf-hd63 Lens For Hitachi

Hello all,

I have been a long time reader of these forums, and never had an issue until now.  I recently performed the fall update from Crackdown and played the game after for about 3 hours with no issues.  I have an Xbox Core system with no saving, so for now I have just been playing the few games I have.  In any case, while playing crackdown after the update, the game started pausing, the graphics were blocky, and some of the textures were completely missing from the buildings (IE invisible see thru walls).  I have the hitachi drive GDR-3120L firmware 0078fk.  Is it possible the fall update messed up the drive, or did the laser just die coincidentally.  Now, none of my originals or backups work.  When I first got my xbox, I noticed the drive was a bit louder and I would hear the laser moving back and forth to the point that I heard it over the game sounds/music itself.  After the fall update and the 3 hours of game time, the issue happened.  Little by little the Crackdown paused, the drive got louder, and the game just froze.  Now, the drive doesn't spin, the laser moves only initially when a disc is inserted, and about 5 seconds later, I get the dreaded OPEN TRAY message, as if the drive doesn't even notice a disk is in it.  Laser issue, or bad drive from the update on crackdown's disk?

I forgot to mention.  I have one backup which was working prior.  I have not done the pot trim mod or the rubber band/1mm thick plastic mod.   Assuming everything was okay, if I was to take the cover off the DVD drive and load the game, I would see a red dot on the bottom of the DVD disk if the laser was reading, correct?

You don't ever want to go looking at the laser, view it in the dark and off at an angle to see if it lights up. That is no guarantee that the thing is working properly though, unless you see no light at all. It can still be lit up and not working correctly.

The update had nothing to do with the 360 deciding to act up. That was just a game update and most, if not all, new games you'll get will have to have that done before you can play them. If you mean you've had it offline for that long and the actual dash update, same applies, it didn't mess anything up and is just a coincidence.

Could be the laser, could be a bad press of the disc also. Since you're having issues with other originals as well though, it does lean more towards the laser or drive itself being bad.

I know not to look at the laser.  I'd go blind if I did (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif).   In any case, I'm glad the update didn't affect anything.  I did shut all the light off and opened and closed the drive.  I didn't see any light coming out of the drive.  I did order a laser just in case.  Thanks for the information.  Hopefully the laser will fix the issue

from what i saw i think the laser is just dying , test it with a dvd movie , test it thouroughly , a backup dvd movie is better for testing , since the original movies are easily read  , so if you see any cracks in the video , that might be a clear sighn , try recalibrating the laser pot , might work for you.
