3 Lights Of Death, Sub Code Seems To Be 0023
« on: February 21, 2007, 12:35:00 PM »

Well this is my friends 360 which has died, but he sent it over to me to sort out as Im a very techy guy with all the tools. So I opened it up today and found that all the TIM had melted on both the GPU and CPU, so I cleaned it off and reapplied. Before this it was making a crackling electronic noise once turned on. Now that has stopped but my 3 lights still remain. Im at a bit of a loss as I didnt see anything else inside to point to major problems. The thing is, if I plug it into a TV I get nothing at all, no load up screen, so Im not like these people who are getting crashes every now and then.

Any advice for this evening efforts, Im going to try and apply some pressure to the board see if the solder has come loose, and look for any more signs of death.

The error code seems to be 0023 which the guide says "0023 (not yet known)" but I swear its changed error codes a few time since Ive been asking it.

For a tech guy you should know that cracking electronic noises are not a good sign.... I am sure there are shorted components somewhere which means teh box is dead.

It wasnt coming from the box but from the speaker on the TV.

I took it all apart again, and removed the heat sinks, the 3 lights of death have stopped coming on, now I only have 2 lights and 0012, which is overheating. Im going to try putting the heatsinks back on, give it another go. Im not hopeful thou. After a quick gander I cant see any signs of bad soldering.

One thing Ive noticed, on the board there are these douhnut shaped components with wire rapped round them, theres 2, and from one there is a rattling sound. I have no idea what these components are, but should they rattle?

Also there are spots on the board for components to go in that are blank, I guess thats normal?
