$5k Investment To Fix 0102, What Do You Think?
« on: February 06, 2007, 02:48:00 PM »

I'm looking into getting the ZT-7 BGA, CSP & SMT HOT AIR REFLOW CENTER. This thing is not cheap by any means.

I saw that one guy had repaired a 0110 with it. I need it to both the 0110 and 0102.

So here is the question. Do you think that using a proper reflow station can achieve this? or do they need to be re-balled?

Thanks for the help!

Let me make sure I understand...you're wanting to buy a $5,000 piece of equipment to fix a $400 console? blink.gif
I certainly hope this is a business investment.

Seems that reflowing may or may not work.  Some think that the lead-free solder is the problem.

lol, no ones going to be able to give you a proper answer.
And its never as simple as it will fix all 0110 errors or 0102 errors.
From what ive read, towels fix some errors, and some dont...
so i imagine same would apply even for a 5k machine, as like u say, it might be down to other things.

Can you not trial a machine from somewhere? or talk to the manufacturer, i.e test it, if it works you'll buy one. lol.

I bought a heat gun and I'm buying some broken consoles here and there now. I bought a broken Japanese one for myself, and will be doing some more the same way. I'd say that machine might be a good investment since you have over 1,000 (probably much more efficient than using a heat gun over and over). What would you have to go through to fix each unit (ie: turnaround time)? Weigh that against how much you've already invested, subtracted from what you expect to re-sell them for. That determines what your time will be worth. Also good if you plan on doing another 1,000 consoles afterwards.

Heat gun has been done and fails. Sure it may fix it, but they always fail after a few weeks or months. The towel trick is a waste of time.

So far I have not been able to find one locally to demo or try. The manuf. will do a 30day trial, but there is a restocking fee. A very HIGH restocking fee.

I would also like to find some one that can xray a few of these. Would be interesting to see that done on about 10 different boards.

.. MDA, I'd love to see some statistics on these heatgun fix's - of the 'fixed' ones - how many fail again because they basically just get a repeat failure (ie they leave it stock) and how many fail even with cooling modifications (faster fans or whatever..).

If 'fixed' ones are OK with cooling mods, then I'd say your machine is a good bet, but if they still fail, then it's an architecture design fault and you're going to get lots of angry customers in time when their board fails again despite cooling mods ...

PS - How on earth did you get 1000 broken Xbox mobo's .. lol ..

Well , I have some experience , First and very important is you want a pre heater, the ZT-7 BGA, CSP & SMT HOT AIR REFLOW CENTER looks like it has one , but I did not see a mention of it, Pre-heaters are important as I found out using a reflow station. Without one you will warp the board. I have used the OKi qx2 system, It cost about the same but its not a elaborate. I have had about a 50% (4 360s total) success rate so far. That's not very good but I did not have to buy the station

I think you'd be better off using the heatgun and fixing the crappy cooling and heatsink mounts.

I would try the Heatgun or just buy another console with an extended warranty.
