Wireless Controller Signal Problem
« on: January 28, 2007, 07:13:00 PM »

Hi, I recently installed the chrome console and controller shell for my 360. The signal strength seems to have decreased as a result. If I block the entire console from the controller, it'll stay connected, but once I put something in front of the controller, it'll disconnect, even something a foot away. I was wondering the location of the signal output of the controller as well as the receiver on the console (infrared on bottom left??). Also, I was wonder if this has happened to anyone here as well as a result of this chrome replacement case. I'd like to know where the signal output is first before I start dismantling things.

Thanks

The controllers connect to the RF board behind the power button.

It's your chrome shell/controller case causing your problems. There seems to be a lot of these threads lately...

would you mind linking me to these threads. the search function doesn't seem to work.

Also, when you say "shell/controller"...are you referring the console as the "shell." I mean I'm aware either the controller or the case is causing a problem with the signal, I just don't know which. Before I put the console shell on there, I had the chrome faceplate for a few months and never had a problem at all. So I'm guessing it must be the controller. I'll rebuild it I suppose.

In response to the RF locatation, you say it's on the board behind the power button... Seeing as how the RF receiver is quite apparent on the console, I'm assuming your referring to the controller. The power button, your referring to as the guide button??

If you know of a picture somewhere, a link would be helpful.

Thanks

I remember seeing somewhere in either the 360 manual or controller manual that it states not to put your 360 near shiny objects....

So replacing your 360's shell to chrome is the problem me thinks!!!..

The controller does not use IR. The remote uses IR. The IR receiver is visible on the front of the console. The controllers us RF and the receiver for that is behind the power button.

well in response to the reply about shiny objects.... only the outside of the controller shell is chrome, the inside is that flat white.

I have still yet to find out where the signal is coming from on the controller. It seems to shut off at the strangest locations. For example, I took the controller downstairs, and went right below the room where the 360 is, and it stayed connected. But when I'm 7 feet from the 360 reclined in my couch and my knee interupts the straight line from the controller to the console, it disconnects. But it will be random, like I could press the top of the controller to my knee and it'll stay connected, or I could sit the same way for 3 minutes then it'll just disconnect...but movement is a factor. Also, I discovered something new. One of my TV remotes was laying on the desk and the way that I sit, my 360 controller aims at it, so I moved it and placed the IR bulb thing an inch away and aimed it at the controller and slowly moved it to various places...and the controller disconnected a few times... So after moving the TV controller elsewhere, the controller seemed to disconnect a lot less, but still does it.

I also removed the faceplate for a little while, but was still experiencing the same disconnect patterns.
Do you think maybe it's the chrome shell on the console??

Tonight I'm going to replace the original controller shell (since I don't have another wireless one) and try that for a bit. If that doesn't work, I'm going to remove the chrome console shell.

But my controller shouldn't disconnect with just my knee 5-10 inches in front of it and the console right?? It doesn't make sense because I can block the entire controller with an object such as a box, and nothing happens.

Also, I remember seeing messages during saving periods where it says "Please do NOT turn off your console or disconnect your controller." Now I know first hand what turning off a console does to a save game when I did it with PS2, but does disconnecting the controller whilst saving really do anything? I'm nervous as hell playing these games that autosave every now and again because my controller seems to disconnect at random times.

well i did a few tests... here are my results:

I tried the original back of the controller would the chrome front piece. Had positive results. But disconnection would continue and signal was week. I could only walk approx. 15-20 away before disconnect.

I noticed some spots on the innards of the back piece had some chrome painted on them accidentaly. I painted these spots white with some acrylic paint. Had negative results. Connection signal significantly dropped. I could put my finger over the charge port on top about an inch away and it would immediately disconnect from 5-7 feet away. Don't really know why.

I put the entire controller back together the way it was originally. Had positive results. It no longer disconnects in strange locations. I was able to walk downstairs, the room in the opposite direction and into the garage before it disconnecting (approx 30-35 feet).

Conclusion: The chrome controller shell sucks. The chrome console shell however, doesn't.

hi,

probably its because there`s metal in the chrome paint and that will make a little faraday cage that blocks the rf signal.

Very nice...I'll make sure to tell this to anyone I know who wants one of these cases. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
