T ghost , I got it downloaded ok . thanks.

slayer, I think it was two red lights, and that was because he didn't have the dvd connected . in the second video where he hooks everything up , it was working.

biggrin.gif

I've been away from the scene since I started this thread (actually this is the second time I checking it)

Anyway, right now another thread is going about this matter on brazillian foruns.. the one with the videos..

I'm downloading them now so I'll comment shortly..

Anyway, there are several confirmed reports of people who sent the console for the "reballing" process that have never had the problem again..

BUT I decided to follow one particular case of a friend on another board I visit (http://www.hardmob.c...t=282751&page=3), he is the one who told me about the original thread on the UOL foruns.

He voluntaried to be our guinea pig since no one was really liking the idea to send the console to some adventurers repair shop, especially since another well known member of the scene was flamming whole thing like mad..

Anyway, he sent his console, got it repaired for R$450 (~U$220), really expensive if you ask me, specially if you are comparing it to the console price in the US... The xbox360 actually cost U$ 1299 here in brazil, it is an absolute RIP OFF, I'm not sure if it is our governament taxes policy or microsoft brazil's rip-off scheme, all I know is that this is ridiculous... Now back to the matter, comparing the repair price to the price of a new unit it is saddly interesting...

So, his console was "reflowed", I don't know what that is, and it lasted 10 days before giving out the ring of death again.. the shop is actually ofering 3 months warranty and REFUNDS if the console stops working again!! I have to say that I'm impressed with their policy, but I'm still skeptical about burning U$220 plus shipment on it.

So we are waiting for his console to be "reballed" this time, IF it works for more than a month I'm gonna give it a shot, if not I'm not buying another 360 until I'm granted ethernal warranty... grr.gif

I've burned 2,5 grands on two consoles.. this is just stupid.. Also I'm considering buying a new mother board from the US, it would cost me around 250 U$ as well.. The only problem is that if it stop at the customs I'm screwed since I'll probably end up pay another U$200 in taxes grr.gif (my country is governed by some fucking thieves with insane taxes policy).

Actually I don't know what to do right now.. I've decided to play oblivion on my pc (athlon XP @2400 geforce 6800GS 1gb ram) with is a piece of trash by today's standards.. My pc would have been MUCH better if I haven't spent my money on this cursed console.

Ok, just watched the full video (got from here http://rapidshare.com/files/18315044/Rebal..._Video.zip.html , btw, I hate rapidshare, they should have uploaded straight to youtube..) and I'm actually surprised..

At first I thought it was overly "un-professional", but after reading megamania's comment, he said that the video was intended to show that it's possible to do it with simple tools.. although he says in the video that it's REALLY dangerous ..

He also mentioned that he's making a second video, now using professional tools.

Anyway, I've mixed feelings right now.. part of me is telling me that I should send my consoles, the other part says that I'll be tearing money doing it..

Guess I'll sit and wait a little longer..

what do you mean by dangerous? you mean risky that you'll screw up your console ? I can see chip
placement as being the hardest part. from the video he looks to just be lining it up by eye.

only thing I can see being dangerous is re-balling those chips all day long and inhaling fumes from the solder ( lead poisoning)

its free , just wait for it to load first. then click on the free side, close to the bottom. its about 20MB ,the first one .

I"m sure a lot of people are downloading it so it might be busy when downloading it.

it was saying the same thing when I tried to download it . I eventually got it to work, so just keep checking back . it might be because others are trying to get it too.

Blackomega, the youtube vid was removed . it said something about a violation of the terms or something.

Okay, I was able to watch both videos. Video #2 is tells me nothing more than anyone with a heat gun can show.

------> That means the chip was NOT removed and simply the solder was "reflowed" (basically heat gunned). As many of the "heat gunners" are doing here in the USA.

"and it lasted 10 days before giving out the ring of death again.. the shop is actually offering 3 months warranty and REFUNDS if the console stops working again!! I have to say that I'm impressed with their policy, but I'm still skeptical about burning U$220 plus shipment on it.

-------> Okay, why didn't they just remove the video chip and reball it, then re-mount it the first time?

No need to answer, I'll tell you why, because it takes a LOT longer to do that then they are making it out to be. In the first video, the guy has the camera close in on his watch to give the impression "It only takes 15 min and you're done" kind of like making popcorn...(or whatever it took) well folks, the video starts with the guy having the GPU off the motherboard, the GPU already reballed and ready to mount to the board. Half the job was already done from the start of the video. May I add, that the first half of the job (ie reballing / removal) takes the longest time. That's why they "reflowed" and not reballed / remounted your friends system.

So we are waiting for his console to be "reballed" this time, IF it works for more than a month I'm gonna give it a shot, if not I'm not buying another 360 until I'm granted ethernal warranty...

----> please keep us posted on this.

==========================================

Folks, the reason they didn't remove / reball / remount the chip is because it comes down to this. The amount of time it takes for these people to remove the chip, reball it, remount it and HOPE that it actually works is not worth their time. I read that somewhere they were going to produce another video using "professional" equipment. I'm waiting to see this. I didn't see anything in the background of the first video that remotely resembles anything like "professional" equipment.

Another thing, the guy in the video simply plops the GPU down, grabs it  in order to center it and expects it to reflow to the corresponding motherboard pads with no problem. It's not that easy. It's nearly damn impossible to "take your chances" and roll the dice like that and hope it works. I'm a professional in this industry and I have to tell you, I've never seen anything like this before.

For anything over $200 USD for repair, they damn well better be removing the CPU and GPU and what ever else it takes to resolve the issue once and for all.

yeah, I wanted to see the whole process from start to finish.

I'm a bit skeptical about the chip placement also, I would think you need something to re-align it to exactly where it was before removal.

I guess time will tell. I'm sure we're going to here about it if the xbox's he's fixed are coming back busted.

LOL at the end of the video it showed the 3RL agine.

It Was 2RL (overheating) due to do not have the heat dissipators and the exaustion system mounted.

But like SMTRework said, we'll never know for how long this 360 worked AFTER the process.

All I know is that on the brazilian forum where this technician posts one of his customers said that his 360 died again 15 days of use after the reballing process and that the 360 is back at the shop for a second repair.

I Think the technician is not making money on the second reballing here, but remember that as he charges R$450 (brazilian currency is called real and US$1 is worth arround R$2.25) a XBOX 360 premium in Brazil retails for R$3,000 (US$1,300) officially sold by M$ and R$1,800 (US$800) illegally imported-contraband (wich is pretty common in that country). XBOX 360 Core are a REAL rarity there and not sold officially by M$ at all.

So for the gamers down there R$450 (US$200) is a very good deal if it really revives the a dead R$3,000~R$1800 (US$800~US$1,300) XBOX 360.
