Is my dvd drive toasted now ? My 20 month old opened my disk tray and put 2 disks into it recently. Not sure how long they were there but when i turned my xbox on it went to the xbox logo screen and not the dashboard. So i opened the tray and saw 2 disks. Took them out and then it went straight to dashboard. It logged me in to xbox live and everything. I can use everything on the dashboard. Now when i put a game in it says reading and goes back to open tray. The drive doesnt spin or anything. I took the 360 apart and opened the drive thinking maybe my son put something else in there and found nothing. Can putting 2 game discs in a 360 break the drive ??

If anyone has help I would appriciate it.
Thanks.

The motor probably broke, if its got a warranty phone MS and see if they'll replace it.

I've stuck 2 discs in my DVD player before in the dark, not knowing one was already in there. To my surprise I ended up listening to a CD instead of watching the movie I had just stuck in, but it did no damage to the DVD player.

The motor may be shot, it may have just pushed the spindle down on the motor too far and can't spin either. Since you've already had it apart see if it free spins easily or if it feels like it's binding up on anything.

When i spun the thing thats in the middle of the game disc.... the round piece.. not sure whats the called but it spins easy for maybe half a rotation the it gets a little stiffer to spin... like it is being caught on something..  What does that mean though ? Is it supposed to spin very easily ?

The part in the middle, what the disc sits on, is called the spindle. Under the spindle is the spindle motor. It should spin freely and not feel like it's dragging or binding up on anything. If you give it a spin it should make at least a couple of revolutions on it's own before stopping.

Not necessarily, the motor is brushless and doesn't have any parts that actually touch to make it spin. The actual motor could be fine, something futrher back that controlers the motor may have gone. I had one here a couple weeks ago that the spindle was almost stuck, it wouldn't spin on it's own either. I wont say how I got that one going because I'm not gonna be responsible for the damage it could cause, but take the thing and spin it with your hand over and over, then switch directions and spin it some more for a few minutes and see if it frees up any at all. If it does tryit out, if it doesn't you're looking at getting a new drive at the least.

What drive is it BTW? Hitachi, Samsung?

Toshiba , Samsung is the drive. I have a buddy that said i would be easer to go to best buy and buy a premium and switch the xbox's and return it lol. Do people do that and is it really that easy ? If not then I might just have to send it to Microsoft... Its still under a year warrenty but since I opened it does that void it ?
Thanks.

Yes your warranty is void since you opened the 360 up.
