Dead 360...
« on: January 01, 2007, 03:37:00 AM »

Ok, so I bought a 360 for one of kids xmas gift from bst forum.  Hooked it up and tried acouple games for few min. to make sure it worked and it did.

Put fw 3.3 on and still worked.  Then went to 4.2 Update and games still loaded alright.  So, all in all I just tried pretty much just to boot the games, no playing time involved.  Total run time maybe 3-5min.

So, xmas morning comes around, kid sticks in a game, creates a profile and loads game... Played for about 2min and game froze.  Restarted and got 3red lights with error code 0110.  I then figured it needed heat gun deal, so next day borrowed one from friend, went over the board in circles then let it sit.  Powered up, no more red lights.  Tried a game, loaded then froze.

I then decided to try some arctic silver 5 on cpu and gpu.  Took the board out and popped the heatsinks off and saw there was little paste on the gpu cores.  Cleaned em up and applied the AS5, reattached everything into the metal casing and tried to power up.  Nothing happens, no lights at all on ROL, power brick is showing a yellow light, but thats it.

I'm at a loss as to what to do now, any usefull suggestions?

Thx

When you removed the heatsinks are you sure you didn't break off any of the tons of tiny, tiny surface mount parts around there? You'll need a good magnifying glass and some time to look over the board real good. While you have it all apart see if it will power up outside of the chassis, make SURE you don't have it sitting on something conductive, put a magazine or something under it if you have carpet to reduce any chance of static zapping it also.

one of my mates had the same prob.error code 0110 he didn't use a heat gun all he did was flash the drive to orig. bin then reflashed it with the new 5.1 firmware, but his power suplly light was green when the error code was showing,  not sure if it will help your machine , good luck, ps you sure everything inside your 360 is conected  properly, sometimes anyone can forget to connect something

Thx for all the comments guys.  I tried reheating the board and still nada.  Everything is correctly inserted.  I'd say I finally did it in on my first attempt at removing the heatsink clamps.  I dont see anything that looks like it was broke off but I cant say for sure, eyesight isn't the best, even with magnifier.  The RoL board Power button looks and feels like its in the correct position.  If ya'll have any more suggestions, by all means shoot em off, I'm open to try anything.

Thx Again.

ok u probably accidentally removed sonme parts  while removin the heat sink. ok remove the heatsink. look around the gpu and cpu if there are any scratches on the mobo look on the other side where the X was. then look for any solder points where the solder looks like ripped. that means there was a part sittin and it fell off. there are many solder points that look like tiny balls. look for one that looks like deformed. ripped. i dunno how to explain it. lol i found that on my mobo once. i put additional heat sink on the memory and then it stops working. i didnt know what was going on. then i realized that there was one resistor missin. replaced it and it worked.
good luck

A friend who owns electronic shop is checking out the traces, capacitors and what not of the board for me.  Maybe he will pick up on something?  Hopefully...

Will respond back later with his opinion.

Thx

Well, after my friend at electronics shop and then another bro that does my solder work for me checked board none of us see any missing resistors or whatnot.  There where some scratches but nothing that wasn't making a connection.  I finally broke down and just said screw it and went to walmart and bought another 360.

Kind of a kicker, when I originally decided to get one everyone was telling me I'd have a hard time finding a samsung drive and I should just buy a used 360 that I knew had a sammy, thats why I went through the bst forum.  Got my unit home from walmart and popped open the drive and low and behold its a damn samsung... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Thx again for replies and for those that pm'd me about sending the dead unit to them to check out, I may still do it just to give it another try or I may just hang on to it for the remaining good parts.  Time will tell.

Just one last question thou, I haven't actually opened the new box yet to see if its an ms25 or 28.  If it is a 28 is it still a good idea to use the rubberband on it?

Thx,
Gly
