Xbox 360 Cant Read Disc
« on: December 31, 2006, 12:26:00 PM »

I recently got an xbox and I played both Gears of War and NBA 2007 on it both froze after around 20 minutes of playing and gave me a disc can not be read error?  It is an unmodified system and this has happened multiple times since then.  Is this a common problem if so what is causing it, would it be a smart idea to adjust the pots?  Thanks

This has been happening to me too, also unmodded. I think I'm just going to exchange it.

Funny thing, i bought gears of war and it worked great for like 2 months and then one day i was playing and it gave me the dirty disc error. I took the disc out and there wasnt one scratch in sight and it wasnt dirty at all (I keep all of my games in the cases). I returned the game and got a different copy and it worked fine after that. Who knows maybe this disc wont read in another few months now.

Adjusting the pots is really a last ditch effort and should only be done fi you have an O-scope and know what to look for and where, it doesn't take much "tweaking" to get a drive to never read a disc again.

If the thing isn't that old and still under warranty then just take it back, you could also have a bad press of your games, it does happen from time to time. If it's still under warranty I say exchange it, no point in getting into the thing if ya don't have to.

If you have the Intercooler on it remove it, I've heard of that thing causing weird lockups and such as well.

If you've had it apart and the warranty is a no go, take the case back apart and leave it open so it gets some more air, DON'T remove the fan shroud, leave it in place, but get the top off so it can get more air, not all overheating isses throw error lights and it may just be starting in on that too.
