Strange 360 Lockup. Seeking Advice
« on: December 29, 2006, 02:38:00 PM »

Has anyone seen this problem? I cant seem to find it. Mine locked up on a scrambled display after about 2 hours of playing straight out of the box.. First thing I had done was add my LIVE account which required the current update. I then played a couple of demos off an OXM demo disc, played a round of the Hex?Whatever?  game in Live arcade and then downloaded and started wathing an HD video clip from the Marketplace. About 20 seconds into the clip the screen when scrambled and bright white.
After this point going to the dash was all messed up and missing items. After an hour or so of rebooting and trying to cool it down etc.. I found a post that suggested doing the re run setup from the System blade. Manging to get to that area in the messed up display I was able to select it and choose YES to do it.

Now all I get is the GREEN ring, the startup animation and then one of 3 things..
1. most often it hangs at the end of the animation.
2. It goes to a black screent and hangs
3. Part of dashboard is displayed but it is scrambled or only 1 graphic from the dash.

In all three cases the ring stays green.

I tried unplugging it for a few hours as well as putting a high power fan on it to cool it down in case it was over heating and still no luck.

Any Ideas. It was manufactured in April 06 and has a Samsung drive. I can exchange it at the place of purchase but I'll have to wait about 2 weeks before they get more stock. I'd like to try and fix it if I can.

Do NOT waste your time. Return it and try to get one made as late as possible....ideally November 06 or later. The heat gun is risky: You need to heat it enought but you don't want to heat it too much or a capacitor may blow up.

Cheers

Yea, just wait 2 weeks, lay off the Xbox 360 and spend some time with your friends! (Or the original Xbox (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)) Don't open it up because once you do, warranty is voided and you can't exchange it.

Ill bet its a problem with one of the RAM chips......i see that stuff a lot in computers, and its almost always bad RAM....

So if you do use the heat gun, i would suggest trying to focus on the RAM chips.

Thank you all for your replies..

I may try the heat gun.. Not sure if I can hold out another couple of weeks. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) After getting a taste of the Lost Planet DEMO I'm jonsing for more. It's no wonder the 360 is all white.. It resebles of Kilo of something else that is white and has the same effect.  M$ gave me a taste and now I'm hooked.  From the looks of things I'd be better off doing the other as the 360 seems like it's goinf to be a verry expensive habbit.

I already tried taking it apart and got hungup on the grey plastic on the HDD side.  Couldn't get it to release.

Still thought it was strange that there were no red lights or error messages.
