Controller Problems

I bought an Xbox 360 wired controller at a swap meet and for some reason it does not work. I was just wondering if there was any way to find out what the problem could be. It does not turn on when i plug it in to the console and when i push the xbox guide button nothing happens. is it just a dud or is there something that can be done?
