Issues With A Friend's Xbox 360
« on: December 26, 2006, 11:47:00 PM »

Hi guys.

My friend has an Xbox 360 that just isn't working anymore. That's right, it has the red ring of death. Being a techie myself, I decided to try to help him since the system is out of warranty anyway. Long story short, we got it open and found the root of the problem.

The item on the lower left hand side of the picture is the component in question. (Sorry about the crappy point out method. MS Paint FTL). Anyway, this component makes a weird shaking sound like something is broken inside. The component itself looks like a small black rectangle that can slip on and off to 4 prongs that are soldered onto the motherboard. Basically, I was wondering what this is and what it does, where I can find a replacement and if one isn't available for sale, is there any way I'd be able to buy one that's not broken off one of the members on the forum? I'm sure some of you have old motherboards that have been parted. I don't know what version my friends Xbox is, but I can find out if needed. I appreciate the help beforehand and look forward to your responses as this has been driving me nuts. Thanks!

pretty sure thats the little thing that has a ball in it to tell the system if its standing up or laying down, as to orient the light on the front. every console has that rattle, if they dont they are broken

Well, he mentioned that his console didn't make a sound until his niece and nephew came over and messed with  it. So to my knowledge, it didn't make that noise before. Not only that, but it's a VERY loud sound when it's moved... not necessarily something that sounds like it'd be acceptable as a end production item.

Sorry to say, but that little switch would cause three red lights. Its just a plasitic casing with 2 sets of metal contacts with a ball bearing inside that tells the console if its vertical or horizontal. Do you get a secondary error code with the 3 red lights?

The rattle noise is normal. That device has a ball bearing inside of it that touches different switch contacts depending on whether the 360 is vertical or horizontal. A mercury switch would have been better, but it is both hazardous and more expensive (unlike the original Xbox, the 360 must follow RoHS regulations).

Hah, I always wondered how the 360 knew which way it was oriented (for the ring). Neat.
