Heatgun Motherboard - Fixed! .. But For How Long?
« on: December 26, 2006, 03:33:00 PM »

I started getting 3 light errors last week which progessivly got worse and worse, and since my box had been opened it was one of my last options to get it fixed. Im quite pleased to say that the fixed worked perfectly and i played my 360 for a few hours last night with out a single crash. (where as before i could hardly play for 15 min, if it turned on at all)

But ive heard some rumours flying around that this heatgun fix might only be a temporary fix and that it could start red lighting again. I was hoping to get some other peoples "REAL" experiences in regards to the heatgun method. ie. If your heatgun fix was successful has it failed since? and if so how long did it take? and if it hasn't failed and still going strong, how long has it been going for?

You got me, mine lasted for all of 10 minutes.  Basically fixed the 0102 code with the Heat gun method, let it cool down, was able to get in the dashboard, hooked it back up and it was on the dashboard for like 10 minutes then it's pulling up an overheating code.  I am pretty sure I hooked everything back up properly and I even replaced the paste with some arctic silver 5.  Oh well atleast I have my backup box.

Tell me your kidding, have you not seen or heard of the heat gun fix to fix error 0102? Basically you cover some of the smaller components and plastics bits on the mobo then use the heatgun to heat up the solder on the mobo and it should reattach any of the loose solder joints.

hey

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYv6b7MndJk

i did 5min
don't put to much paste !!

good luck!

p.s. you need time to dry those paste !!
Important Reminder:
Due to the unique shape and sizes of the particles in Arctic Silver 5's conductive matrix, it will take a up to 200 hours and several thermal cycles to achieve maximum particle to particle thermal conduction and for the heatsink to CPU interface to reach maximum conductivity. (This period will be longer in a system without a fan on the heatsink or with a low speed fan on the heatsink.) On systems measuring actual internal core temperatures via the CPU's internal diode, the measured temperature will often drop 2C to 5C over this "break-in" period. This break-in will occur during the normal use of the computer as long as the computer is turned off from time to time and the interface is allowed to cool to room temperature. Once the break-in is complete, the computer can be left on if desired.

no, i havent heard of it. that is the n00biest way to fix that problem, its not that hard to look over the board for dry or lose joint, then just give it a touch with the solderign iron. i fix tv's and vcr's and dvd's all the time with dry joints, and thats the best way to do it

Actually the points that cause it to give the error code is usually one of the ones under a chip, or one where there are alot of pins close together, and since you have no idea what joint is causing the problem it's a good method to do the whole board at once.

Yeah cause its easy to resolder 100s of tiny points that are between the board and the chip that u cannot see.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) The error is caused by bad solder joints in the memory. They use bga solder balls and then put it in an oven to let the solder melt and connect. Problem is that bad joints are very commom in earlier consoles.

this is the video that i used. I did exactly what was in this video. 2 min on low. 2 min on high.

i wasn't getting any error codes. my 360 just wouldn't boot. and just flashed 3 red lights.
